CAMBRIDGE - The No. 17 ranked MIT men's squash team defeated No. 22 Tufts University by an 8-1 score early Thursday evening.
MIT jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and never looked back. Engineer sophomore Keith Lamp was then awarded with MIT's fourth point as he edged Tufts freshman Vivaan Jaikishan in five sets by scores of 12-10, 11-7, 9-11, 7-11, 13-11 at position six.
Tufts' lone point came from junior co-captain Salik Awan in the ninth spot as he edged MIT's Wonjune Kang in five sets by scores of 2-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8, 12-10.
In addition to the teams splitting the two five-set matches, the Engineers won two four-set matches as well. First-year Matt McManus clinched the team victory for MIT with his four-set win over Jumbo sophomore Dillon O'Shea (12-10, 11-9, 5-11, 11-5) at position seven. Aman Sanger defeated Jumbo senior co-captain Raghav Kumar in the second spot 11-6, 11-5, 10-12, 11-7.
The Jumbos (1-2) finish first-semester action when they host Bowdoin College at Harvard University on Saturday at 1 pm. MIT (7-3) returns to action also on Saturday, as the Engineers will host No. 18 Brown University at 4 pm.
