HARTFORD, Conn. – In the opening round of the Conroy Cup at the College Squash Association Team Nationals the No. 28 Tufts men's squash team topped No. 29 Connecticut College, 7-2. With the win the Jumbos advance to play No. 25 Hobart in the semifinals on Saturday.
With the win the Jumbos are now 9-11 overall this season. They face off with Hobart in Conroy Cup semifinal play tomorrow and if they win that match would play for the Conroy Cup on Sunday. The Jumbos were narrowly edged by Hobart, 5-4, at the beginning of January.
Sophomore Raghav Kumar lost the first game in the first position, but he battled back to win the second. After his opponent Alex Snape won the third, Kumar came through with 11-9 and 11-8 wins to take the five game battle in the top spot (7-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 11-8). In the second position, junior Alan Litman won a four game battle with John Dunham, 11-6, 8-11, 11-3, 11-8.
Junior co-captain Aidan Porges won the first game but fell in the second game to Samuel Piller in the fifth position. After Porges took the third game, Piller won the fourth and it came down to a close fifth game in the fifth position. Porges won that fifth game to pick up the 11-7, 7-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9 win for the Jumbos. Freshman Salik Awan also battled with James Andrew in the sixth position. Awan won the first game but lost the next two. Down, 2-1, Awan won the fourth game in extra points and then picked up an 11-7 win in the sixth position to win 11-5, 9-11, 6-11, 14-12, 11-7.
Sophomore Connor Wind won a four game battle over Daniel Reisman in the seventh spot, 11-5, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9. In the eighth spot freshman Daniel Hutt needed just three games to pick up a win over Winton Simone, 11-7, 11-8, 11-5. Rounding out the Jumbos lineup was freshman Amun Sahrawat in the ninth position and he won in four games, 11-9, 11-7, 4-11, 11-4.
The Jumbos will face off with Hobart at 11:30 am on Saturday at Wesleyan. Haverford and Bowdoin play in the other semifinal match on Saturday at 11:30 at Wesleyan. Saturday's winners meet at 11:30 am on Sunday at Trinity for the Conroy Cup final.
