Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Monster Third Quarter Propels No. 1 Jumbo Men Past Bates, 18-5

MEDFORD, MA (April 9, 2025) -- The top-ranked Tufts University men's lacrosse team went on a 13-goal run over a 16:18 stretch of the middle part of the game, pulling away for a big 18-5 home win over visiting Bates College in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) on Bello Field Wednesday evening.

It took the No. 1 Jumbos (11-0, 7-0 NESCAC) some time to get going, as the Jumbos led just 5-4 after Bates College's Denzel Evans scored with six minutes left in the first half. With 1:18 to go in the second quarter, junior Jack Regnery scored an assisted tally to make it 6-4 followed by another Regnery goal 40 seconds later to increase Tufts' lead to three at 7-4. Tufts wouldn't stop there, as they drew up a perfect play out of timeout with 12 seconds left in the half and Garrett Kelly netted a score as time expired to make it 8-4 at the break.

After intermission, the Jumbos would put on the gas leaving the visiting Bobcats in the dust as Tufts netted 10 unanswered goals in the frame. Junior Brooks Hauser started the third-quarter assault with his 23rd of the season, while the Jumbos tallied three goals in a 58 second stretch to make it 14-4. Minutes later, a three-goal run over 50 seconds gave the Jumbos a 13-goal lead at 17-4 after Max Ettinghausen scored off of a nice feed from Hauser.

Senior Max Melton would finish the scoring in the third quarter with his first of the season, as the 10-goal third quarter was the most goals in a quarter since May 12, 2024 against Stevenson University in the NCAA Second Round last spring.

Ettinghausen capped the night with six points on four goals and two assists, adding two ground balls, and Jack Regnery also tallied four goals and two assists. Hauser had three scores and two grounders, and Kelly finished with three points on two scores and a helper. Will Emsing also finished with a team-high three assists, and Charlie Tagliaferri also had a goal and assist.

Senior defender Michael Ayers led all Jumbos with four ground balls, while Ben Frisoli tallied three caused turnovers and two loose balls along with yet another score from his long-stick midfield spot. Sophomore Logan lee had three caused turnovers as well, and George Panagolpolous and Cam Delcristo each had two grounders and a caused turnover.

The goalkeeping position was hot for Tufts on Wednesday, as all five keepers got in while all five made at least one stop. Conner Garzone played 43:14 of the game while making 13 saves to get the win, and Ben Friedman stopped two shots in 6:44 of action. Will Anderson and Jack Old both stopped the two shots on goal in their four minutes of play, and first-year Alex Dircks also stopped a shot in his 1:51 in net.

Parker Merril went 6-of-12 on the evening for the Jumbos at the "X" as he posted his 600th face-off win as a member of the Jumbos as he now has 601.

The Jumbos won the ground ball battle 40-35 on the night, and went 2-for-2 with the extra man. For only the second time in 2025, Tufts was outshot with a 50-45 edge to Bates.

The Bobcats got two points from Connor Hartman, while Andrew Toland finished with 11 saves in net for Bates.

Tufts will take battle No. 16 Middlebury College Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m. for Senior Day on Bello Field in NESCAC play.
