MEDFORD, MA (May 13, 2023) -- The No. 1 Tufts University men's lacrosse team used a strong team effort to defeat Emmanuel College in an NCAA Second Round Game, 27-5, in action Saturday afternoon from Bello Field.
The Jumbos had 16 different goal scorers as
Victor Salcedo got Tufts to start just six seconds into the game as he won the opening faceoff and ran down the field scoring his fourth goal of the season.
Tommy Swank then scored twice just 41 seconds apart to give Tufts the 3-0 lead as
Jack Boyden and
Kurt Bruun assisted him. Bruun and
Charlie Tagliaferri scored the next goals to give Tufts a five-goal lead as Swank assisted Bruun on his goal. Tufts would take a 7-0 lead going to the second quarter after
Brooks Byrnes and
Garrett Kurtz scored with Boyden and
Louis Timmins assisting on the goals.
To start the second quarter,
Kevin Christmas found the back of net with Drew Chant scoring for Emmanuel to make it 8-1. Tufts scored the next eight goals going into the half as
Drew Guida's goal got it started to bring the lead back up to eight with Bruun assisting him.
Callum Wood took a pass from
Joey Kraft, and he buried it to get the lead to 10-1 as Swank then gave the Jumbos a double-digit lead at 11-1 off the feed from Byrnes. The next three Jumbo goals came in the span of one minute and 11 seconds with
Garrett Kelly finding
Sam Frisoli for the 12th Tufts goal, as Kraft then scored off a Christmas pass.
Beau Keough then scored the next three goals to give the Jumbo a 16-1 lead going to halftime. Kelly found Keough on his second goal and then
Liam Nestor assisted on the third goal.
The third quarter saw back and forth action between the teams as
Brooks Hauser and Wood scored the first two goals for the Jumbos as Kraft and Hauser assisted on the goals. Ryan Castle found the back of the net for the Saints as Wood scored his third of the day with Kraft adding his third assist. Kelly then found the back of the net with Ryan Etzo scoring for Emmanuel before the end of the quarter with Tufts leading 21-4 going to the fourth.
Josiah de Grasse got the scoring started in the fourth for Tufts as Kurtz and Nestor scored the next three goals for Tufts with Nestor scoring twice. Kraft assisted on Nestor's second goal and then scored twice off feeds from Keough to give Tufts the 27-4 lead. Derek Delvecchio scored for Emmanuel with 10 seconds to finish the game 27-5.
Kraft racked up a career-high seven points for the Jumbos with three goals and four assists while Keough had five points with three goals and two assists. Wood added four goals while Swank and Kelly had four points.
Nestor and Bruun each had three points with Kurt scoring twice. Hauser, Christmas, and Byrne each scored and had an assist. Boyden had two assists while Salcedo, Tagliaferri, Frisoli, de Grasse, and Guida each scored with Timmins adding an assist.
Both Salcedo and
Erik Helgeson had strong games at the face-off "X" with Salcedo going 7-for-10 and Helgeson finished 15-for-25.
Byrnes and
Lane McCarty had strong games defensively with each forcing three turnovers while
Greg Wells forced two as well. Guida scooped up five ground balls as the Jumbos for the game collected 52.
Conner Garzone started and made two saves with
Cody Wiebe coming in and finishing with four saves.
Castle scored twice for Emmanuel with Etzo adding a goal and an assist. Chant and Delvecchio each scored, with Randy Castle making 12 saves in net for the Saints.
Tufts will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m., in the NCAA Third Round. They will take on York (Pa.) who defeated Cabrini 18-9 in the other Second Round Game at Tufts on Saturday. Â
