HOBOKEN, NJ (March 19, 2023) -- The No. 2 Tufts University men's lacrosse team outscored host Stevens Institute of Technology 11-0 in the third quarter, blowing open a close game at the halftime intermission to earn a 21-7 road victory over the No. 17 Ducks in non-conference action from DeBaun Athletic Complex Sunday afternoon.
Sunday marked the second time this season that the Jumbos (5-0) held its opposition scoreless in a third quarter while tallying 10 or more goals themselves, as Tufts outscored Springfield College 13-0 in the third quarter of a 31-9 win over the Pride on March 8 at home.
The win also saw senior
Jack Boyden tie a pair of school records, as he evened his career-high with 13 points while also tying the school record of 10 assists in a contest set back in 1957 by Gardner Spungin against Trinity (CT). Boyden has 13 points in two of his last three games, and has 10 or more points in three games this season, and eclipsed 200 points for his career as he sits with 201 in his career now.
Boyden got the Jumbos on the board first just eight seconds into the game, as
Mason Kohn won the face-off and fed his classmate in transition to open the scoring. Stevens (7-2) answered just over a minute later, but Boyden set up goals from
Charlie Tagliaferri and
Joe Murtha to make it 3-1.
The Ducks and Jumbos exchanged goals over the final six minutes of the quarter, as Tufts led 4-3 heading to the second quarter.
Cam Delcristo started the scoring in the second quarter, but like the end of the first stanza, the two teams went back and forth until back-to-back goals from Tufts by
Kevin Christmas and
Tommy Swank made it 8-5 with 7:19 left in the first half.
Boyden's third goal of the game would hand the Jumbos their largest lead of four at 9-5 headed into the locker room. From that point, it would be all Jumbos as the lead ballooned to 15 following a goal from first-year
Victor Salcedo to make it 20-5 going to the fourth quarter. A man-up goal from Swank early in the fourth finished the scoring for the Jumbos, as they rolled to the victory.
Boyden finished with three goals, 10 helpers, eight shots, three ground balls and two caused turnovers in the big game, while Bruun continued to star offensively with five goals and an assist.
Swank tallied four points on three goals and an assist, and Delcristo and Salcedo each scored a pair of goals. Salcedo was part of a dominating performance at the face-off "X" for Tufts, as he was 7-of-11 for six ground balls while Kohn finished 13-of-16 with nine loose ball pick-ups.
Six others scored for the Jumbos in the win, while the defense had a big day as well led by
Joey Waldbaum and his three caused turnovers and six ground balls. Delcristo tabbed three caused turnovers and four loose balls in addition to his pair of goals, and
Kyle Adelmann tallied two caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Three goalkeepers played between the pipes for the Jumbos, as Connor Garzone made seven stops in three quarters of play to earn the victory.
Cody Wiebe stopped five shots as well, while
Eugene Yoon came in to make a diving save as well.
The Jumbos dominated the team stats with a 67-42 edge in shots including a 43-20 lead in shots on goal, while picking up 61 ground balls to just 38 from the Ducks.
Kevin Crowley scored three goals for Stevens, while Shea Grant handed out two assists in the loss.
Tufts will continue their Spring Break trip down the East Coast, taking on Cabrini University in Radnor, PA just outside of Philadelphia Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in a non-conference affair.
