RADNOR, PA (March 21, 2023) -- The No. 1 ranked Tufts University men's lacrosse team collected its fourth straight win over a ranked squad Tuesday, racing away from No. 18 Cabrini University for a 24-7 win over the Cavaliers in non-conference action from Edith Robb Dixon Field.
The big run for the Jumbos (6-0) was a 13-goal spurt that turned a 6-4 lead into a 19-4 run away in the third quarter. Tufts led 3-0 in the early going, as
Tommy Swank netted an unassisted goal before Cabrini got on the board at 7:18 of the first on a goal by Dillon McManus.
The Jumbos answered that with two unassisted tallies from
Charlie Tagliaferri and
Kurt Bruun, but McManus tallied again to make it 5-2. After Tufts scored again, Cabrini netted two goals to make it 6-4 with 2:12 to play in the opening frame. That was the last time that the host Cavaliers would score until midway through the third period.
Swank scored from Bruun and then netted another goal from
Jack Boyden to make it 8-4 at the end of the first quarter. Swank continued his monster game with two more goals to open the second frame, and added two more later in the period including a man-up goal that marked his 100th point of his career.
The goals kept coming in the second quarter as
Louis Timmins tallied from Boyden, and Bruun assisted
Max Ettinghausen on the EMO to send the game to the break with the Jumbos up 17-4. In all, Tufts outscored its hosts 9-0 in the second frame, outshooting Cabrini 19-8.
Tufts poured in five more goals in the third quarter, including another man-up goal from
Joe Murtha, outshooting Cabrini 20-5 in the period. The Jumbos would get goals from
Garrett Kelly and
Jonathan Cayer tallied his first collegiate goal, as
Brooks Hauser posted his first point as a Jumbo on the play with an assist.
Boyden finished the day with four goals and six assists, adding five ground balls and a caused turnover. It was the fourth game of the season for Boyden with 10 or more points, as he sits with 58 points through six games.
Swank tied his career high for goals in a game with six, while he set a new personal-best total for points with eight with two assists. Swank also fired 11 shots, a team-high.
Bruun posted two goals and a career-high five assists, adding two ground balls, and Tagliaferri, Erringhausen and
Kevin Christmas each scored twice.
Joey Waldbaum finished with two caused turnovers and six ground balls, while
George Panagopoulos also added two forced turnovers.
Kyle Adelmann added two caused turnovers and two ground balls, and
Michael Ayers picked up three ground balls in addition to his caused turnover.
Senior
Mason Kohn dominated at the face-off "X," going 11-of-13 with eight ground balls for the Jumbos, and Connor Garzone made five stops in net to earn the win.
Cody Wiebe made five saves and allowed no goals in 7:43 as well in relief of Garzone.
Tufts outshot its hosts 61-37 on the night, while forcing 23 turnovers by the Cavaliers (5-2). Tufts was also 3-for-5 with the extra man, while holding Cabrini off the board in their two chances with the man-up. Tufts has now scored 19 or more goals in all six games this season, and are averaging 23.75 goals per game on the road in four victories.
Connor Herraiz assisted on all but one of Cabrini's goals Tuesday night, while McManus finished with three goals on four shots on goal for CU.
The Jumbos will return to New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play on Saturday, taking on Trinity College on Bello Field at 1 p.m. in Medford, MA.
