Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MEDFORD - Jumbo pitchers Gavin Brown, Silas Reed, Matt Benda and Matt Donato (pictured) combined on a three-hit shutout in game two as the Tufts University baseball team split a NESCAC East Division doubleheader with Trinity College on Saturday. The Jumbos won game two 6-0 after Trinity took the opener 7-5 in seven innings.

Brown (1.1 IP, 0 H), Reed (3 IP, 2 H), Benda (0.1 IP, 0 H) and Donato (4.1 IP, 1 H) helped the Jumbos earn their 20th win of the season in game two. Ryan Noone hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Jumbos all the offense they would need.

Trinity had left the bases loaded in the top of the first against Brown. With two outs in the Trinity fourth, Bantam Jake Leonard tried to score on a Tufts error and was thrown out at the plate by Jumbo second baseman Kyle Cortese. The Jumbos added two in the bottom of the inning when Patrick Solomon walked and eventually scored from third on a caught stealing at second base. Miles Reid also singled home Clay Sowell, who had walked and Tufts led 4-0.

The Bantams would leave them loaded again in the fifth. That's when Donato entered and got the final out on a fly ball. He woulld retire the last 11 hitters he faced. Reed (3 IP, 2 H) was credited with the victory, improving to 3-0.

Tufts added one in the fifth when Peter DeMaria reached by error, Noone and Cortese hit singles and then Solomon had a fielder's choice rbi. The Jumbos finished the scoring in the eighth with a Cortese double and an rbi single by Ozzie Fleischer.

Noone, Cortese and Fleischer had two hits for Tufts in game two, while DeMaria scored twice. Cooper McGrath took his first pitching loss of the season for Trinity, allowing three hits and three runs in three innings. James Stefanowicz had two hits for the Bantams.

In game one, Colin Mann went 3 for 4 with three ribs for Trinity. He hit an rbi single and Stefanowicz had a two-run single in Trinity's three-run third inning that gave them the lead for good at 6-5. They added on a run in the sixth when Stefanowicz doubled and scored on Bennett Teceno's infield hit.

After allowing five runs in the first two innings (four earned), Trinity would not allow another. Starter Michael Aceto got the win going 5.1 innings giving up 11 hits, and Jake Mello saved the game giving up just one hit in 1.2 innings.

The Bantams had scored three in the first inning off Tufts starter Connor Podeszwa. Patrick Dillon singled home a run and Mann singled in two more. However, Tufts had its own strong start with four in the first. DeMaria had an rbi single, Cortese doubled home a run and Connor Bowman hit a two-run single that put Tufts ahead 4-3 at the time. The Jumbos lead went to 5-3 in the second after Jackson Duffy led off with a single and scored on Jimmy Evans' sacrfice fly.

Jack Schwartz (3.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R) and Michale Volgende (1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R) were good in relief for the Jumbos, but the offense was able to come from behind against Aceto and Mello from Trinity. DeMaria doubled to start the bottom of the seventh, but did not score.

Dillon finished 2 for 4 with two runs for Trinity in game one, DeMaria was 3 for 4 for Tufts. Miles Reid went 2 for 4 as Tufts out-hit Trinity 12-9 in the game. Podeszwa took the pitching loss.
