MEDFORD – Despite an eight-inning, 15-strikeout performance from starting pitcher Cameron Mayer (pictured), the #23 Tufts University baseball team fell just short to the Trinity College Bantams 2-1 in the first of a three-game NESCAC East series on Friday afternoon at Huskins Field.
Trinity (13-12, 5-2 NESCAC) starting pitcher Jimmy Fahey threw a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits with four strikeouts for the win. Michael Volgende pitched the top of the ninth inning for the Jumbos (19-7, 4-5 NESCAC), getting the three batters he faced to ground out. Brandon Chow led the Bantams' offense, going 3 for 3 with a run scored while Peter DeMaria had three of the Jumbos' five hits, finishing 3 for 4 with a double.
Both teams went down in order in the first inning, with Mayer striking out the side to begin the game. He struck out two in the second inning and Tufts got the first hit of the game in the bottom half on a DeMaria single, but the Jumbos were unable to get a run on the board.
Trinity crossed the plate first in the top of the third after James Stefanowicz doubled to center field to lead it off. Chow singled two batters later and stole second, drawing a throw that allowed Stefanowicz to score. Tanner Fairchild put the Bantams up 2-0 in the next at bat, singling to left field to score Chow.
The Jumbos got on the board in the fifth inning on a Jackson Duffy rbi single to left, scoring Kyle Cortese who led off the inning with a double off the left field fence, making it 2-1 heading into the sixth. Both pitchers continued their dominance in the next two innings, shutting down the opposing lineups in order. Chow ended the game's two-inning hitless streak with a single in the eighth inning.
The final scoring opportunity for the Jumbos came in the bottom of the ninth as DeMaria gave them a chance with a two-out single up the middle, but Tufts was not able to get a two-out rally going, as the game ended with a 2-1 score in favor of the Bantams.
Both teams will return to Huskins Field tomorrow, Saturday, April 23 for a doubleheader to finish off the three-game series with the first game set to begin at 12 pm.
