Baseball Earns Saturday Split to Win Weekend Series Over Colby

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MEDFORD - Shortstop Ozzie Fleischer (pictured) had three hits in the second game, when he tripled and scored the go-ahead run in the fourth inning, as Tufts split a NESCAC East Division baseball double-header with Colby College on Saturday at Huskins Field. Tufts won the nightcap 8-4 after losing the opener 10-4, when Colby's Cabot Maher hit two home runs.

Following Friday's 10-9 win on a walk-off grand slam by Jumbo Patrick Solomon, Tufts won their series against the Mules with their 8-4 win in game two today. They scored three times in the first inning to get going, including a two-run home run by Jimmy Evans. Both teams scored runs in the second, with Colby's Charlie Furlong hitting a sac fly scoring Drew Miller, who had doubled, and a Fleischer single scoring Solomon who had also doubled. Tufts led 4-1.

Colby tied the game with three in the top of the fourth. They loaded the bases against Tufts starter Brendan McFall, then Marcus Forrester walked home a run and Brady O'Brien hit a two-run single to left tying the game 4-4. In the bottom of the fourth though, Fleischer led off with his triple and scored on a Miles Reid fielder's choice.

In a two-run Tufts sixth, Reid singled and then Peter DeMaria and Kyle Cortese had back-to-back rbi doubles. Tufts' final run in the eighth came on another Reid single and DeMaria double.

Reid finished game two 3 for 5 with two runs and an rbi, while DeMaria was 2 for 4 with two rbis and a run. Freshman Connor Podeszwa entered to pitch in the fourth and went the rest of the way allowing five hits and no runs in 5.1 innings for the win.

Colby's Miller was 2 for 3 with two runs in game two, while O'Brien finished 2 for 4 with the two rbis. John Doyle took the loss in relief (3 IP, 4 H, 3 R).

The seven-inning first game had seen Colby score nine times in the fourth inning. Tufts had taken a 3-0 lead in the second highlighted by Connor Bowman's two-run single. However, Colby took charge in the fourth started by Maher's two-run home run. Colby then had a Furlong single up the middle for an rbi, a Genki Leclair triple down the right field line for two rbis and Forrester's infield single scoring another run. The Mules weren't finished as Patrick McConnell capped the inning with a two-run double.

Bowman homered for Tufts in the fourth and Maher hit his second home run of the game for Colby in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Tufts starter Cameron Mayer (3.2 IP, 8 H, 8 R) took his first loss of the year. Reid had three of Tufts' eight hits while Bowman finished 2 for 3 with three rbis and a run. Jack Bohrer was good enough for the win on the hill for Colby, giving up four hits and four runs in four innings. O'Brien scored twice for the Mules.

The Jumbos (14-2, 2-1 NESCAC East) will host Eastern Nazarene College in a single game on Monday at 3. The Mules (11-3, 1-2 NESCAC East) host Thomas College on Monday at 5.
