Baseball Drops NESCAC East Doubleheader at Bowdoin Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Tufts University baseball team (17-6, 4-4 NESCAC) lost both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Bowdoin College (11-13, 4-2 NESCAC). The Jumbos dropped all three games of their NESCAC East series in Maine this weekend.

In the first game, the Jumbos carried a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the fourth, when the Polar Bears brought four baserunners home for a 7-5 lead, a score that would stand until the game's conclusion after seven innings. In the second game, the Jumbos carried a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth, but Bowdoin scored 11 runs across the subsequent innings to beat Tufts 12-5.

Tufts began the first game strong, scoring two runs off a Peter DeMaria (pictured) rbi single and a Ryan Noone rbi from an error charged to Bowdoin second basemen Stephen Simoes. The Jumbos and the Polar Bears traded runs in the bottom of the first and the top of the second, before an error by Jumbo shortstop Ozzie Fleischer and a Ben McKenzie single allowed Bowdoin to tie the game at 3-3.

In the top of the third, Tufts catcher Connor Bowman rocketed the ball to deep left field for a home run to give the Jumbos their lead back. In the next inning, center fielder Miles Reid scored on a wild pitch to give Tufts a two-run advantage going into the bottom of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, Bowdoin regained their lead, scratching off four runs from a Nick Merrill rbi double, a CJ Brito-Trinidad two-RBI double and a Gabe Peckler rbi double. Neither team would score another run after the bottom of the fourth, and Bowdoin closed the game out with a two-run victory in the first game of the doubleheader.

The winning pitcher in the first game for Bowdoin was Jack Mullen, who threw a complete game and gave up five runs on eight hits. The losing pitcher was Connor Podeszwa. Jack Schwartz pitched two shutout innings in relief for the Jumbos, striking out two batsmen and walking one.

In the second game of the afternoon, the Jumbos got on the board in the first yet again, with Ozzie Fleischer scoring after Peter DeMaria grounded into a double play. Scoring slowed after the first, and the Jumbos carried their 1-0 lead into the fourth inning.

In the top of the fourth, DeMaria knocked one over the center-field wall to bring the Jumbo lead up to 2-0. Kyle Cortese scored an unearned run off of an error by Bowdoin third baseman Nick Merrill to give the Jumbos a three-run lead. Bowdoin got on the board in their frame in the fourth with an rbi single off the bat of Gavin Cann.

In the top of the fifth, Bowman pulled the ball to left field for an rbi single to answer back for Tufts. Bowdoin would respond by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the bottom of the sixth to give them a 6-5 lead over the Jumbos.

At the top of the seventh, Jimmy Evans scored on a passed ball to bring the Jumbos within one. The Polar Bears scored three more runs in the bottom of the inning though off a Bobby Pearl run-scoring single and a Richie McNamara two-rbi single to give Bowdoin a 9-5 advantage. Bowdoin effectively closed the door on a Jumbo comeback in the bottom of the eighth with a three-run home run by Gabe Peckler to conclude scoring for the day at 12-5.

The winning pitcher for Bowdoin in the second game was Jason Bogdanos. The losing pitcher for Tufts was Justin Wells.

The Jumbos will return home on Monday for a Patriots' Day doubleheader against UMass Dartmouth. They will go back on the road for a Wednesday afternoon game against MIT before returning home for a three-game homestand against Trinity on Friday and Saturday.
