Five-Run Fifth Propels Baseball to 7-2 Win at Johnson & Wales

Box Score

PROVIDENCE - Senior co-captain Ryan Noone's (pictured) two-run triple keyed a five-run fifth inning that led the Tufts University baseball team to its second victory in as many days to start the 2022 season, 7-2, at Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday.

The Jumbos (2-0) were trailing 2-1 entering the fifth and would score all five of their runs after two were out. Jimmy Evans walked and then with two outs stole second and third. After Clay Sowell was hit by a pitch, Evans scored on a base hit to left by Miles Reid to tie the game. Jackson Duffy's infield single loaded the bases, then Sowell scored on a wild pitch. Noone's two-run triple to left followed, and then he scored on a double to left by Ozzie Fleischer. That put Tufts up 6-2.

Freshman Connor Podeszwa had a strong start for the Jumbos, winning his collegiate debut. He went six innings allowing four hits and one earned run with seven strike outs and no walks. Gavin Brown followed with two no-hit, no-run frames striking out four, and Silas Reed finished it with a 1-2-3 ninth. The Jumbos allowed just four hits.

Reid continued his hot start with a 2 for 3 game, scoring twice in addition to the rbi. Evans was 2 for 5 with two runs, while DeMaria and Fleischer had two hits apiece.

The host Wildcats (0-6) had two early leads. Three straight singles including a run-scoring base knock by EJ Leone gave them a 1-0 lead in the second. After Evans singled and scored on Kyle Cortese's sac fly to tie it in the third, Griffin Snyder reached on an error, took third with a passed ball and scored on a sac fly by Xavier Botelho for a 2-1 JWU lead through four innings.

Following their five-fun fifth, Tufts would tack on a run with a single by Reid, a walk to Noone, Fleischer reaching by error and Nate Bozzella bringing home the run with a sacrifice fly.

Johnson & Wales used eight pitchers in the contest with Ryan Cormier taking the loss. Starter Jake McDonough went two scoreless while Garrett Fusco (1 IP), Jake Hernandez (1.1), Ben Fosberg (1.0) and Noah Reeder (1.0) each had scoreless stints.

The Jumbos continue their season-opening week at Eastern Nazarene College tomorrow. First pitch is 2 PM.
