Baseball Gets 21 Hits, Gives Up 7 In Double-Header Sweep Of Bates

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MEDFORD – The Jumbos received a pair of strong starts from pitchers Michael Volgende and Cameron Mayer, and finished with 21 hits in 12 innings while sweeping a baseball double-header against Bates College at Huskins Field on Saturday. The scores of the seven-inning games were 14-2 and 5-1.

Cameron Mayer gave up just two hits in six innings during his game two start.

The games don't count towards the NESCAC standings as Tufts improves to 8-2 overall. The Bobcats fall to 1-3.

Volgende improved to 3-0 with five innings allowing three hits and one earned run in the opener. Freshmen Silas Reed and Justin Wells pitched scoreless innings in relief. Then Mayer (2-0) allowed just two hits in six innings with eight strikeouts and just one walk in the nightcap. Tufts pitching gave up just seven hits in 14 innings for the day.

Tufts' bats hit four home runs in the first game and now have 15 in their 10 games this spring. A grand slam by Ryan Daues in the first inning put Tufts up 4-0. Peter DeMaria hit a solo shot in the third and then Miles Reid added a three-run tater in the fourth and a two-run homer in the fifth as the Jumbos played long-ball while building a 12-0 lead. Brandon Bay also had a two-run double when Tufts scored seven times in the fourth.

The Bobcats scored their two runs in the fifth on two hits, a walk and a Jumbo error. Tyler Attal, who had two of Bates' three hits in the game, had an rbi single in the frame.

Reid finished 3 for 5 with five rbis and three runs scored for the Jumbos. DeMaria was 2 for 2 with three runs and Daues also recorded five rbis. Nate Bozzella had two hits and scored twice. Peter Schuldt (3 IP, 4 H, 5 R) started and took the loss for Bates.

Mayer would only allow one Bobcat to reach third base in his game-two start. The Jumbo offense sprung for three runs after two were out in the second inning. Kyle Cortese started it with a double and Ozzie Fleischer singled him home. A Bates error and a balk led to the next two runs.

Two more Bates errors helped Fleischer score in the fourth after he led off with a single. Reid then started the sixth with a double and scored on a single by Jimmy Evans for a 5-0 Tufts advantage.

Zach Avila led off the Bates seventh with a single and spoiled the shutout by eventually scoring on a wild pitch.

Reid had two more hits in the nightcap to finish the day 5 for 8 with two doubles, two home runs, four runs scored and five rbis. Fleischer went 3 for 3 with two runs and an rbi in game two. The pitching loss went to Bates' Ian Tolis (1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER).
