MEDFORD – The third-ranked Tufts University field hockey team swarmed Wellesley College early with three goals in the first seven minutes and went on to a 7-0 victory in a non-league game at Ounjian Field on Wednesday night.
The Jumbos (8-2) got two goals from senior Gillian Roeca and another from classmate Claire Foley within 1:21 of game action to build the early lead. Senior Melissa Manzello also scored a pair of goals for the Jumbos, while Roeca added an assist for a five-point game. The Tufts defense would not even allow an attempted shot by the Blue (6-4) during the game.
The first Jumbo goal 6:32 into the first came when Foley stole the ball near the left sideline in Wellesley's end. She dribbled it into the Wellesley circle where Roeca took it and fired a shot that beat Wellesley keeper Kyra Deehr-Lewis right side. Just 33 seconds later, after Marin Waddington made a defensive play, Beth Krikorian led Schuyler Edie with a pass. She forwarded it along nicely onto Roeca's stick and she scored back-handed for a 2-0 lead. Just 48 seconds after that on a corner, Manzello had a shot that was saved by Blue defender Eleanor Wenners. However, Roeca pushed the rebound to Foley at the right post and she scored making it 3-0.
Tufts put eight shots on goal in the first quarter, with Deehr-Lewis stopping four of them. The Jumbos would have 13 shots on goal by halftime. Their two second-quarter goals came on a penalty stroke by Reegan McCluskey awarded during a flurry in front of the Wellesley net during a Tufts corner, and then six minutes later when a McCluskey shot from the top-left of the circle on another corner was deflected in by Manzello at the left post for a 5-0 score.
A steal by Krikorian near midfield led to Tufts' sixth goal. During action close to the cage, a shot by Jumbo freshman Rachel Scrivanich was saved. Manzello tapped the rebound just over the goal line three minutes into the second half.
Freshman Carolyn Thompson finished the scoring with her first collegiate goal three and a half minutes into the final period. She tipped in a pass from the top right of the circle by Sophie Shoenie giving Tufts a 7-0 lead.
The Jumbos finished with advantages of 22-0 in shots and 7-0 in corners. Andie Stallman, Sam Gibby and Emma Smith shared the shutout in goal for Tufts. Wellesley's Deehr-Lewis finished with 10 saves, her third double-figure effort of the season.
