Endicott Shuts Out Jumbos in Non-Conference Baseball Action

Box Score

BEVERLY – Three Endicott College pitchers limited Tufts to three hits as the Gulls took a 7-0 non-conference baseball victory over the Jumbos on Wednesday afternoon.

Junior Elias Varinos was on base twice and had a steal for Tufts.

Senior starter Kyle Wollman went seven innings allowing the three hits and two walks with three strikeouts for Endicott (20-13). Graduate student Victor Molle and senior Liam Burke both pitched a scoreless inning of relief, allowing one walk apiece.

For Tufts (21-6), junior 3B Elias Varinos and senior SS Will Shackelford both had singles and a walk.

The Jumbos had a good scoring opportunity in the top of the first when Varinos walked and stole second. Sophomore DH Kyle Cortese then walked with two outs and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. However, Wollman got a pop-up to end the frame.

Endicott then scored twice after two were out in the bottom of the first. Freshman SS Benjamin Schena led off with a walk and scored on a double by sophomore catcher Jordan Carvalho. A single by sophomore 1B Kyle Brennan scored Carvalho making it 2-0.

Tufts freshman starter Lucas Gustavson then matched Wollman in throwing zero's from the second through fourth innings as the score remained 2-0. The Endicott righty faced the minimum amount of batters from the second through fifth which included an outfield-assisted double play in the third.

The Gulls increased their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Gustavson struck out senior LF Matt Bald to open the inning, but he reached first on a wild pitch. After a hit-by-pitch Carvalho drove home another run with a base hit. Another hit-by-pitch loaded the bases and the second Gulls run scored on a fielder's choice.

Three more hit-by-pitches loaded the bases for Endicott in the bottom of the seventh and a sac fly by sophomore DH Nickolas Perkins made it 5-0.

The Jumbos had runners on second in third with one out in the top of the eighth after a single by freshman catcher Ryan Noone, a walk by Shackelford and a sacrifice. However, Molle stranded the runners. The Gulls then closed the scoring with a two-run triple by Brennan in the bottom of the eight scoring Schena (single) and Bald (walk).

Carvalho finished 3 for 3 with two rbis and a run for Endicott. Brennan was 2 for 3 with three rbis. Schena and Bald both scored twice.

Tufts travels to Trinity for an important NESCAC East Division series starting on Friday. The Gulls are at Gordon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game tomorrow.
