Baseball Scores Most Runs This Season in 23-2 Victory over Eastern Nazarene

Box Score

MEDFORD - Junior 3B Tommy O'Hara went 3 for 3 with seven rbis and three runs scored, and sophomore SS Will Shackelford finished 4 for 5 with four runs scored and three rbis as the Tufts University baseball team routed Eastern Nazarene College, 23-2, on Thursday afternoon at Huskins Field.

Freshman Ryan Day hit a three-run home run in the seventh

The Jumbos' 23 runs topped their 22-0 victory over St. Vincent College on March 18 as the most scored this season. It's the most in one game by the team overall since a 28-2 win at Brandeis University on April 4, 2015. Tufts, which finished with 20 hits today, improved to 22-5-1.

Eastern Nazarene, led by a pair of hits from freshman 3B Devin Haberstumpf, dropped to 11-18-2.

An rbi double by sophomore catcher Eric Schnepf followed by an rbi triple from Shackelford started a six-run second inning that got the Jumbos going. Senior RF Oscar Kutch and O'Hara hit run-scoring singles and junior LF Mike McLaughlin had a two-run single in the inning as well.

Lions freshman SS Steven Pesce doubled with one out in the third and scored on a Jumbo error making the score 6-1.

O'Hara's fourth home run of the season was a three-run shot to deep right that put Tufts up 9-1 in the third. The Jumbos added six more in the fourth, when O'Hara came up with the bases loaded and cleared them by roping a double down the right-field line. McLaughlin had an rbi double in the inning as well helping Tufts take a 15-1 lead.

The pace slowed down for a short while in the middle innings. The Lions got their second run in the top of the sixth as sophomore DH John Greenlee scored on a single by senior Nick Story.

After making widespread substitutions, the Jumbos got back to scoring in the seventh. The first career home run by freshman catcher Ryan Day, a three-run job to right, was part of a five-run frame that gave Tufts a 20-2 lead. Junior RF Stephan White had hit an rbi single earlier in the inning. The Jumbos finished their barrage with three runs in the eighth.

Tufts used five pitchers with freshman Brad Marchetti starting and going two scoreless innings. He was credited with his first collegaite victory. Freshman Elias Varinos retired all six batters that he faced during the seventh and eighth.

Day made the most of his opportunity for the Jumbos, going 3 for 3 with three rbis and two runs scored in half a game. Eight Jumbos scored two or more runs, with Petry joining O'Hara at a game-high three runs apiece. Sophomore DH Casey Santos-Ocampo was 2 for 4 with two runs and junior 3B Boomer Saraga added two rbis.

Starter Daniel Rivera took the loss for ENC, pitching 1.2 innings allowing six hits and six runs. All 23 runs against the Lions' staff were earned.

Tufts plays a three-game NESCSAC East Division series against Bates College at Huskins this weekend, starting tomorrow at 3 p.m. Eastern Nazarene hosts Western New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference double-header tomorrow starting at 2:30 p.m.
