Box Score

MEDFORD - Tufts senior Matt Moser hit a walk-off home run in game one and the Jumbos scored seven runs in the first inning of game two as they swept a NESCAC East baseball double-header over Trinity College on Saturday at Huskins Field by 5-4 and 11-4 scores.

Ian Kinney pitched five scoreless innings of relief in the second game

Along with a 7-4 win over the Bantams on Friday, the Jumbos sweep the weekend series and remain unbeaten in the division (5-0) while improving to 16-4 overall. Trinity falls to 9-14 overall and 4-5 in the NESCAC East.

The Bantams came through with some heroics of their own in the first game. Down to their final out in the top of the seventh and trailing 4-2, they tied the score with back-to-back home runs by Nick Pezzella and Johnny Stamatis.

When the game went to the eighth, Tufts reliever R.J. Hall, who had surrendered the home runs, put the Bantams down 1-2-3 including two strikeouts. Moser then led off the eighth with his home run to left-center.

Tufts had taken an early 3-0 lead in the first inning highlighted by Tommy O'Hara's two-run single. Jumbo starter Speros Varinos did not allow a hit although he walked three in the first four innings. Pezzella would get his team's first hit, a two-run home run in the fifth pulling the visitors within 3-2.

The Jumbos added to their lead in the sixth when O'Hara singled and scored on a base hit by Harry Brown leading to the dramatic finish.

The Jumbos won with just six hits, including a 2 for 3 game with two runs and an rbi by O'Hara. Varinos went six for Tufts allowing three hits and two runs with seven strikeouts and four walks. Hall improved to 4-0 with the win in relief.

Pezzella was 2 for 3 with three rbis and two runs at the top of the Trinity order. Stamatis finished 2 for 3 with a run and an rbi. Ian Steckel came of the bench to get two hits. Trinity starter Anthony Egeln lasted 6.2 innings allowing five hits and four runs (two earned). Sam Jordan took the loss in relief.

Tufts' seven-run first inning in the second game featured a two-run double by Moser, a two-run home run by O'Hara, and a three-run homer by Eric Schnepf.

Trinity would claw back within 7-4. Pezzella continued his great day with a double and a run in the first and an rbi single in the second. Daniel Pidgeon hit a two-run home run to right in the third.

Jumbo sophomore relieve Ian Kinney would come on and quiet the Bantams. He pitched five scoreless innings allowing three hits with six strikeouts and a walk to earn the win in relief. The Jumbos added two in the fourth and two in the sixth on a two-run double by Tom Petry.

Tufts had 13 hits in the second game including two each by Cody McCallum, Brown, Moser, and Petry. McCallum, Brown, and O'Hara all scored twice.

Trinity's Pezzella, Stamatis, Pidgeon, Brendan Pierce, and Ben Reinisch all had two hits in the second game. Starter Chris Speer suffered the pitching loss.

The Jumbos host a Patriots' Day double-header against UMass-Dartmouth on Monday at 12:30. Trinity also plays on Monday with a single game at home versus Western Connecticut at 3:30 pm.
