Women's Sailing Finishes Ninth of 18 at Emily Wick Regatta

NEW LONDON, CT - The Tufts women's sailing team had a top 10 finish over the weekend, placing ninth in the 18-team Emily Wick Trophy hosted by Coast Guard on Saturday and Sunday.

The A Division team of sophomore skipper MaryClaire Kiernan with junior Amanda Sommi and senior Caitlin Durand as crews placed seventh with a 146 score. Senior skipper Kate Levinson with senior crew Emily Lynn were 12th in B's with finishes totaling to 148.

The Jumbos' 294 total was one in front of 10th place Rhode Island and three behind eighth-place Old Dominion. Yale won the regatta with 70-102-172 totals.

Sixteen races each were sailed in the two divisions. In A's, Sommi crewed for Kiernan in races one through 10 and Durand finished up in races 11 through 16.

Twenty races were completed on Saturday in a west-northwest breeze that ranged from 5 to 25 knots and everywhere in between. A glassy Thames River greeted competitors on day two of the Wick Trophy. Luckily, the sea breeze developed and allowed racing to being at 11 am. The breeze started out of the southeast and slowly clocked over to the southwest and provided excellent racing conditions for six races in each division.
