CAMBRIDGE - In their final event of the fall season, the Tufts women's sailing team finished 12th out of 18 teams at the Atlantic Coast Championship hosted by MIT on Saturday and Sunday.
In two divisions of 18 races each, Tufts compiled finishes totaling to 227 in A and 161 in B for a cumulative 388. They were behind 11th-place College of Charleston (358) and in front of 13th-place Old Dominion (398). Navy won the regatta with a 219 score.
The Jumbo B boat placed eighth in their division. Junior skipper Kate Levinson with senior crew Emily Lynn had consecutive finishes of second, second and first in the fourth through sixth races.
In A's, Tufts was in 17th place. Their best race was the 17th when they were third. The Jumbo line-up included sophomore MaryClaire Kiernan as skipper for the first through 11th and 14th through 18th races. She was replaced by junior Kate Shaner for the 12th and 13th starts. The crews were senior Caitlin Durand for the first through 11th, sophomore Julia Fuller in the 12th and 13th and junior Amanda Sommi for the 14th through 18th.
Racing for the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship was held in a brisk 4-8 knot North-Westerly breeze on Saturday. A fickle and cold, light SW wind greeted the sailors on day two of the women's ACC. Temps remained in the low 40s and skies finally cleared late in the afternoon. Winds were in the 3-4 knot range with large holes before finally settling down and building steadily to a SWerly at 8-10 knots for the final set.
