MEDFORD – The #8 Wellesley field hockey team scored one minute into play, but the #10 Jumbos responded with two of their own to secure the 2-1 win on Wednesday evening at Bello Field. Sophomore Dominique Zarrella scored in each half to help the Jumbos edge the Blue.
Wellesley got on the board early in the game, as just one minute into play the Blue drew a penalty corner. In the commotion in front of the goal, sophomore Courtney Peterson was able put the ball past senior co-captain Bri Keenan to put the Blue up 1-0. The assist on the goal came from senior Meghan Peterson.
The Jumbos would even the score just under 13 minutes into the game as sophomore Annie Artz stole the ball from a Blue player attempting to clear the ball out of their zone, and fed it to teammate Zarrella who was right in front of the goal, and able to sneak the ball past Blue sophomore goalie Lucy Hurlock.
Despite aggressive play from both teams, the score would remain locked at one for the duration of the first period. The Blue were able to edge the Jumbos in shots in the first period, 8-3, and penalty corners, 3-2. But, strong defensive play from junior Alexandra Jamison helped keep the Jumbos in the game.
The Jumbos turned it up a notch in the second half, holding the Blue to no shots and no penalty corners in the second half. Just over 20 minutes into the second half the Jumbos drew a penalty corner and junior Dakota Sikes-Keilp unleashed a rocket that Hurlock was able to kick away and save. The ball deflected off Hurlcock to the stick of junior Maggie Chapman, and Chapman sent the ball over to Zarrella who put the Jumbos ahead, 2-1, with her ninth goal of the season and second of the day.
Tufts finished with the advantage in shots, 13-8, and penalty corners, 7-2. Keenan finished the day with three saves, while her Blue counterpart, Hurlock finished with five saves.
Wellesley moves to 12-2 on the season. The Blue will be back in action on Saturday when they host Springfield at 12:00 pm. The Jumbos are now 9-3 on the year, and will host Williams on Saturday at 1:00 pm as part of Parents Weekend at Tufts.
