MEDFORD - Junior pitcher Tom Baroni (Mount Kisco, NY) threw a five-hit shutout to lead the Bates College baseball team to a 3-0 victory at Tufts in the NESCAC East Division opener for both teams on Friday afternoon at Huskins Field.
Baroni struck out four and did not walk a batter while posting his first victory of the season. He gave up four singles and a double, with only one Jumbo reaching third base.
The Bobcats (6-4, 1-0 NESCAC East) gave Baroni a 1-0 lead before he even took the mound. Sophomore DH Rockwell Jackson (Fort Worth, TX) reached on an error with one out in the first and stole second. He scored when senior 1B Kevin McGregor (Randolph, NJ) plopped a single into center.
Jumbo junior starter Christian Sbily (Gaithersburg, MD) kept it a one-run game through the seventh inning. After giving up two hits in the first, he allowed just one from the second through seventh innings.
Tufts junior LF Nate Izzo (Saunderstown, RI) doubled with one out in the seventh as the Jumbos threatened to tie the game. A ground ball out moved Izzo to third, but Baroni left him there by getting a fly out to center.
The Bobcats added two big insurance runs in the eighth. Freshman 2B Conor Reenstierna (Lincoln, MA) worked a one-out walk and then scored on a triple to center by freshman CF Samuel Warren (Norfolk, VA). Jackson followed with a single to score Warren.
Baroni finished off his shutout by retiring the Jumbos 1-2-3 in the ninth. He set down the last eight Jumbos in order, and 11 of the final 12.
Senior SS Scott Staniewicz (Boca Raton, FL) was 2 for 4 atop the Jumbo order. Izzo finished 2 for 3. Sbily struck out seven with one walk while allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) in 7.1 innings for Tufts (7-6, 0-1).
The teams play a double-header at Huskins Field tomorrow as the series continued.
