Tarik Smith scored 12 points off the bench

Medford, MA - The Tufts men's basketball team earned a 76-62 non-conference win over Plymouth St. Tuesday night at Cousens Gym. Senior Kwame Firempong (Los Angeles, CA) led four players in double-digit scoring for the Jumbos with 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

The Panthers fell to 6-2 and were led by Logan Kesty who recorded a game-high 20 points with two rebounds and two steals. Curtis Arsensult added 12 points and four rebounds while Uche Nwokeji scored nine and grabbed two boards and two steals.

Freshman Hunter Sabety (Oceanside, NY) recorded a double-double scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Jumbos. Sophomore Ryan Spadaford (Rockville Centre, NY) and freshman Tarik Smith (Bronx, NY) came off the bench to score 14 and 12 points respectively with each adding two rebounds. Senior Andrew Dowton (Canton, MA) finished with nine points and 10 boards.

Tufts scored the first basket of the game on a dunk by Sabety but the Panthers answered with a 7-0 run with five points coming from Arsenault. A three-point play by Sabety and an Oliver Cohen layup would tie the game at 7-7 at the 15:18 mark.

The Jumbos would get a six point lead on Folliards' trey with 9:14 remaining and would get their largest lead of the first half of eight points when freshman Tarik Smith (Bronx, NY) sunk a three with 59 seconds left. The two teams would go into intermission with the Jumbos leading 32-26.

A layup by Sabety would make the Tufts lead eight with 17:48 remaining but free throws by Arsenault and a layup by Adam Goodwin would trim the Jumbo lead to 41-39 with 15:25 left in the game. It would then be back and forth play by both teams until the Jumbos were able to pull away with a run sparked by Smith's layup for a 12 point lead at the 4:11 mark. The Jumbos would hold on to its double-digit lead for the remaining of the period on good free-throw shooting and finished with a 76-62 victory.

Tufts shot 45.8 percent from the field and held the advantage in rebounds 40-30.

The Jumbos (6-4) are off until Saturday, January 4 when they travel to Newbury. Plymouth St. hosts Salem St. Thursday at 7:30 pm.
