Trinity College Baseball Gets 19 Hits to Take NESCAC East Series Opener at Tufts, 18-5

MEDFORD - In an impressive offensive display, the Trinity College baseball team had 19 hits, including three home runs, as they opened a three-game NESCAC East Division series at Tufts with an 18-5 victory on Friday afternoon at Huskins Field. Junior SS Stephen Rogers (Watertown, MA) led the Bantams, going 4 for 5 with two doubles, a triple, four rbi and two runs scored.

Junior LF Michael Rueger (Teaneck, NJ) finished 3 for 4 with a home run, three runs scored and two rbi for Trinity. Junior RF Alex Almeida (Bridgeport, CT) went 2 for 3 with a home run, three runs scored and two rbi. Freshman 1B Bryan Wolfe (LaHabra Heights, CA) was 3 for 6 with two runs and an rbi. In addition to all their production, the Bantams left 15 runners on base.

Trinity won its ninth straight game while improving to 16-5 overall and 4-0 in the division. Tufts lost for the first time in nine games, falling to 12-4 and 0-1.

Tufts had led 3-0 after three innings. They scored an unearned run in the first with an rbi single by freshman 3B Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, CA). In the third, senior 1B Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA) doubled home a run and later scored.

Jumbo senior starter Dave Ryan (Trumbull, CT) stranded five Trinity base runners in the first three innings. However, the Bantams scored eight times after two were out in the fourth against three Jumbo pitchers. Rueger hit a two-run home run and junior DH Joe Papa (Stoneham, MA) had a two-run single. Nine straight Bantam batters reached base safely at one point.

The floodgates opened from there. A two-run triple by Rogers highlighted a four-run Trinity fifth that put them up 12-3. He and Wolfe added run-scoring singles in the sixth that made it 14-3 Bantams. Trinity scored four more in the eighth, including two on a pinch-hit home run by junior Marc Crowley (Andover, MA).

The Jumbos scored twice in the bottom of the ninth after sophomore 2B Tim Mitropoulos (Winchester, MA) led off with a walk. Junior pinch-hitter Tom Howard (Rockville Centre, NY) later had an rbi single.

Trininty freshman starter Anthony Redamonti (Trumbull, CT) went five innings allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) to get the win. Senior Edward Donovan (Milton, MA) pitched three strong innings of one-hit relief, allowing no runs and striking out four.

Senior SS Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) and Collins each had two of Tufts' 10 hits. Hauser knocked in a pair of runs.

The teams continue the series with a double-header tomorrow at Huskins beginning at noon.
