Derek Miller gave up just one run in 7.2 innings for the game two victory

HARTFORD, CT – The visiting Tufts University Jumbos swept the Trinity College Bantams, 5-3 and 4-1, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division baseball double-header this afternoon.
Tufts improves to 12-4-1 overall and stays perfect in the NESCAC East at 6-0 with its sixth consecutive victory over the Bantams including a13-0 triumph in the opener of the three-game series yesterday. The Jumbos have won nine in a row overall. Trinity drops to 13-8 overall and 3-3 in the division.
Both pitching staff gave solid efforts with runs scoring in just six of the day's 16 innings. In the opener, junior RHP David Ryan (Trumbull, CT) allowed seven hits and three runs with seven strikeouts, and senior southpaw Derek Miller (Whitman, MA) surrendered six hits and one run with five K's over 7.2 innings in the second game for the Jumbos. Tufts senior closer Edward Bernstein (Foxboro, MA) saved both games, fanning four in two innings.
Trinity freshman righty Ryan Carr (Cos Cob, CT) went the distance in game one, scattering nine hits with four strikeouts, and junior RHP Edward Donovan (Milton, MA) yielded eight hits and three runs with five K's over six innings in game two for Trinity.
Trailing, 1-0, in game one thanks to an rbi single by Tufts senior Chase Rose (Paradise Valley, AZ) in the top of the first inning, Trinity scored three times in the bottom of the inning on an rbi groundout by junior 1B Kevin Mortimer (Spencer, MA) and a two-run single by sophomore CF Joe Papa (Stoneham, MA).
Tufts answered immediately with four runs in the second frame, highlighted by a two-out, two-rbi double by junior Sam Sager (Cranston, RI). Trinity put runners on base in every inning, but could not score a run the rest of the way in the scheduled seven-inning opener.
The Bantams scored in the opening inning again in the second game when junior 2B Alex LiDonni (Norwood, MA) led off with a single and scored on a base hit by Papa. Tufts scored all the runs it needed in the third stanza on an rbi double by senior David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) and a sacrifice fly by Rose, and added insurance runs in the fourth and ninth innings.
Papa had two hits in each game for the Bantams, while Sager was 2 for 3 in game one with two doubles and two RBI, and Orlowitz and junior Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA) each went 3 for 5 in the nightcap for the Jumbos.
Tufts hosts Division II Bentley College on Wednesday at 3 pm. The Bantams travel to a single game at Whaton on Monday at 3:30 pm.
