HARTFORD, CT - Junior Kevin Gilchrist (Medford, MA) pitched eight shutout innings to lead the Tufts University Jumbos to a 13-0 trouncing of the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East baseball action this afternoon on Campus Field.
The Jumbos take sole possession of first place in the NESCAC Easat, improving their record to 10-4-1 overall and 4-0 in the league with their seventh straight win. Tufts snaps Trinity's four-game winning streak as the Bantams fall to 13-6 overall and 3-1 in the NESCAC.
Statistically, the game was a match-up of two of the top five starting pitchers in the NESCAC. Gilchrist, fresh off of a complete game nine-inning shutout over Bates last weekend, was pitted against Trinity senior co-captain Andrew Janiga (Ellington, CT), the league leader in ERA, and got some offensive help early.
The Tufts bats opened the second inning with a run and added three in the top of the third to give the Jumbos a 4-0 lead. Tufts only piled it on from there, scoring a run in the fifth, and four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.
Sophomore Eric Weikert (Avondale Estates, GA) had a strong day at the plate, going 3 for 5 with a double, three runs and four rbi, and senior David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) scored three runs and stole two bases to lead the Jumbos.
Trinity junior Alex LiDonni (Norwood, MA) and sophomore Michael Rueger (Teaneck, NJ) collected two hits apiece to lead the Bantams.
Tufts has allowed just 19 earned runs in their last 74 innings for a 2.31 team era over that span. Gilchrist has not allowed a run in his last 17 innings pitched, and lowers his ERA to 2.06 in five starts this season. Trinity had scored at least ten runs in each of their last five games, and in nine of their last eleven.
