MEDFORD - The Tufts University baseball team won a pair of one-run games on Sunday against Bates College to sweep a double-header against the Bobcats in NESCAC East Division play. The Jumbos won the first game 7-6 and took the nightcap 3-2.

Including Saturday's 5-0 win, Tufts swept the three-game weekend series against the Bobcats. The Jumbos are now 9-4-1 overall (3-0 NESCAC East) with six wins in a row. Bates fell to 6-10 overall and 0-3 in the division.

In the seven-inning first game, the Jumbos scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to go ahead 7-6. Senior David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) was hit by a pitch with one out. He went to third on a double by junior 3B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) and then scored on a ground out by senior RF Chase Rose (Paradise Valley, AZ). Sager then scored the eventual game-winning run on a passed ball.

Tufts senior Ed Bernstein (Foxborough, MA) earned the win in relief with 2.2 no-hit innings. Bates had the potential tying run on second base with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Bernstein got a strike out to end the game. Sophomore Michael Spinosa (Charlottesville, VA) took the tough-luck loss in relief for Bates, allowing one hit and two runs (one earned) in 2.1 innings.

The visiting Bobcats had led 2-0 early on a two-run home run by senior catcher Gordy Webb (Hampden, ME) in the second. A four-run third inning highlighted by a three-run double from junior catcher Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA) put the Jumbos up 4-2. A two-out solo home run by Orlowitz in the fourth gave Tufts a 5-2 advantage.

The Bobcats fought back with four in the fifth inning to lead 6-5. Senior CF Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, ME) hit a two-run single and senior LF Chris Burke (Andover, MA) followed with a two-run double.

Orlowitz, who initiated the winning rally in the sixth, finished game one 2 for 3 with three runs and an rbi. Sager walked three times and scored twice for Tufts.

In game two, the score was tied at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Jumbo senior 2B Frank Petroskey (Dallas, TX) led off with a single. He was sacrificed to second by senior SS David LeResche (St. Louis, MO) and then scored the winning run on a two-out single through the hole on the left side by Rose.

Bates had got on top early in game two, scoring twice in the first including a double by senior 1B Noah Lind (Meriden, NH). They had the bases loaded with one out in the first after the two runs were across, but Tufts starter Derek Miller (Whitman, MA) retired the next two batters to squelch the threat.

The game evolved as pitching duel between Miller and Bates senior Paul Chiampa (Pembroke, MA). Collins hit a solo home run in the second to pull the Jumbos within 2-1, and then back-to-back doubles by Orlowitz and Sager tied the score at 2-2 in the seventh. Miller would allow five hits and two runs in seven innings, while Chiampa surrendered six hits and two runs with no walks in seven innings.

Rose, who has 16 rbi in 14 games, finished game two 3 for 5. Freshman Christian Sbily (Gaithersburg, MD) and junior Jake Crawford (Boise, ID) both pitched scoreless innings of relief for Tufts, with Crawford recording the win.

Sophomore Ryan Sonberg (Windsor, CT) had two hits at the top of the Bobcat batting order. Losing pitcher Tom Baroni (Mount Kisco, NY) gave up two hits and one run in 1.2 innings of relief.

The Jumbos play a pair of games at Brandeis on Tuesday, one against the Judges and another versus Daniel Webster. Bates continues NESCAC East play at home against Bowdoin next Friday.
