MEDFORD - Junior Kevin Gilchrist (Medford, MA) pitched a complete-game shutout to lead the Tufts University baseball team to a 5-0 victory against Bates College in the NESCAC East Division opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Huskins Field.
Gilchrist scattered 10 hits over nine innings, with a Bates runner reaching third base only once. He did not walk a batter and struck out six while improving to 3-1 and lowering his era to 2.67 on the season.
The Jumbos won their fourth straight and moved to 7-4-1 overall and 1-0 in the NESCAC East. Bates, whose starter Kari Alexander (Cambridge, MA) had only one bad inning, fell to 6-8 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
With the game tied 0-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Jumbos struck for four runs against Alexander. Back-to-back singles by senior RF Chase Rose (Paradise Valley, AZ) and junior catcher Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA) set the table. Sophomore 1B Tom Howard (Rockville Centre, NY) hit an rbi single, and the Jumbos also forced in runs with a walk and a hit by pitch.
Gilchrist, who had worked out of a two-on, one out jam in the first, faced a bases loaded situation in the Bates fifth, but got a fly out. The Jumbos added a solo run in the fifth when Collins led off with a double and scored on the second sacrifice fly of the game by senior LF Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL).
The Jumbos finished with 12 hits as Collins was 3 for 3 with two runs scored, senior 2B Frank Petroskey (Dallas, TX) was 3 for 4 with a run and Rose added two hits.
Bates senior CF Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth ME) was 3 for 4, while senior catcher Jake Simon (Waterford, CT) and senior RF Chris Burke (Andover, MA) both had two hits. Alexander allowed 11 hits and five runs while striking out three and walking one in 6.1 innings of work. Freshman Tom Baroni (Mount Kisco, NY) and classmate Jeffrey Gunn (Atlanta, GA) both pitched short stints of scoreless relief.
The teams continue their series with a double-header beginning at noon tomorrow.
