MEDFORD -- Senior C Alex Perry (Danvers, MA)
blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give
the Tufts University Jumbos the lead, and then they added seven
more runs in the eighth, en route to a 14-9 decision over the #25
Trinity College Bantams in NESCAC East Division baseball action on
Friday afternoon at Huskins Field.
With the win, the Jumbos completed a season sweep of Trinity and
improved to 23-5 overall and 10-2 in NESCAC East play. Coach John
Casey's team had already secured the honor of hosting the 2010
NESCAC Baseball Tournament next weekend (May 7-9) at Huskins.
Trinity, which was eliminated from NESCAC Tournament contention,
drops to 16-9 and 6-6 in conference.
Trinity busted out of the gate first, scoring three times in the
top of the first, keyed by a two-out, two-run double by freshman 2B
Joe Papa (Cambridge, MA). The Jumbos were kept quiet through the
first two frames, but were able to break onto the scoreboard with a
pair of runs in the third, taking advantage of a hit by pitch and a
walk. Junior DH Ben Walkley (Trumbull, CT) singled
in the first run, and then he and junior SS David LeResche
(St. Louis, MO) executed a double-steal for the second
run.
The Bantams answered back in the top of the fourth with two of
their own on a single by freshman SS Steven Howard (Cheshire, CT),
and a throwing error by the Jumbos that later plated Howard.
Trinity's 5-2 advantage was quickly cut into by the Jumbos in the
bottom of the fourth, as again Tufts put two runs across the plate
on a pair of sacrifice flies from junior 2B Frank Petroskey
(Dallas, TX) and junior LF Ian Goldberg (Lake
Forest, IL).
It remained 5-4 Trinity until the top of the sixth where the
Bantams received a lead-off double from freshman 1B Brad Runowicz
(Cheshire, CT). He then scored after the following batter,
sophomore C Kevin Mortimer (Spencer, MA), singled and was thrown
out at second base by Jumbo junior RF Chase Rose
(Scottsdale, AZ) as he was trying to stretch the hit into
a double. Tufts was able to answer the run and add another in the
bottom of the inning as the first three to bat all singled. The
third single was an RBI hit by LeResche, and then later the third
sacrifice fly of the game, this one from Rose, tied the ballgame up
at 6-6.
Tufts starting pitcher sophomore Kevin Gilchrist
(Medford, MA) set down the Bantams in order in the
seventh, which left the door open for the Jumbos to take the lead
in the bottom of the inning. Each of the first two batters for
Tufts struck out, but with two outs, Perry connected on his third
homer of the year to give the Jumbos their first lead of the
contest at 7-6.
After another scoreless inning for Trinity, Tufts erupted in the
bottom of the eighth, plating seven runs on five hits. Sophomore 3B
Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) stroked an RBI double,
Perry walked in a run, and Petroskey, LeResche and Goldberg all
singled a man home as the Jumbos took a 14-6 lead in an inning that
saw 12 batters come to the plate.
Trinity made things interesting in the ninth, belting
back-to-back-to-back solo home runs from senior CF Matthew Sullivan
(North Reading, MA), senior RF James Wood (Windham, NH) and
freshman 3B Stephen Rogers (Watertown, MA). They would eventually
load the bases up, but with the tying run standing on-deck, Tufts
sophomore closer Chris DeGoti (Miami, FL) would
strike out sophomore PH Andrew Koris (Milton, MA) to seal the deal
for the Jumbos.
Gilchrist earned the victory for the Jumbos, pitching seven
innings allowing six runs (five earned) with eight strikeouts and
no walks. He remains perfect on the season at 4-0. Out of the
bullpen, junior Ed Bernstein (Foxboro, MA) threw 1
and 2/3 innings allowing his first three earned runs of the year in
the ninth inning. DeGoti faced one batter in the ninth to pick up
his seventh save in 2010, one shy of the team's single-season
record.
Trinity's losing pitcher was sophomore Edward Donovan (Milton,
MA) as he went 2.1 innings and allowed Perry's go-ahead homer in
the seventh, falling to 2-4. Senior starter Derek Anderson (Great
Falls, VA) only lasted 3.2 innings for the Bantams, giving up four
earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts, two walks and two hit
batsmen.
Tufts will battle Springfield in a double-header on Saturday
afternoon in Springfield beginning at 12 noon. Trinity stays
in the Boston-area for a doubleheader at MIT on Saturday at 12
pm.
