LEWISTON, Me. -- Tufts University broke a 0-0 tie with three
runs in the seventh and added additional runs in the eighth and
ninth innings to score a 5-2 victory over the Bates College
baseball team on Friday, in the NESCAC East Division opener for
both teams.
The Jumbos (10-2, 1-0 NESCAC East) will play a doubleheader at
Bates (9-4, 0-1) on Saturday beginning at 12 pm.
Starting pitchers Dave Ryan (Trumbull, CT) of
Tufts and Paul Chiampa of Bates both had the game under control
through six innings, but the Jumbos finally got to Chiampa in the
seventh. Senior DH Corey Pontes (Milton, MA) drew
a leadoff walk, and senior catcher Alex Perry (Danvers,
MA) followed a line-out by junior CF David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) by reaching on an error, as
Pontes moved to third. Jnior 2B Frank Petroskey (Dallas
TX) came up and delivered the game's biggest hit, a double
to left field that scored both Pontes and Perry. Petroskey scored
Tufts' third run of the inning on a two-out triple to right field
by junior LF Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL) before
Chiampa finished the inning by getting sophomore 3B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) to fly out.
Noah Lynd, who started at designated hitter, came on to pitch
the eighth for Bates and quickly got two outs. But Pontes drew a
walk, and Orlowitz drove a double to the center field fence to
score Pontes for a 4-0 Tufts lead.
The Jumbos added a fifth run in the ninth off of Lynd. Petroskey
hit a one-out single, and moved to third on a double by junior
shortstop David Leresche (St. Louis, MO) down the
left-field line. Goldberg was given a free pass to load the bases,
and Sager drew an RBI walk to make it 5-0.
Bates rallied in the bottom of the ninth for two runs. Noah
Burke hit a one-out single to center field, his third hit of the
game, and he advanced to third on a single to right by Mike
Ciummei. Kevin McGregor bounced into a fielder's choice that scored
Burke for Bates' first run. Pat Murphy kept the inning alive by
poking a single through the right side, and Tom Beaton drew a walk
to load the bases. Josh Linscott, an eighth-inning defensive
replacement in left field, came up as the potential game-tying run,
and Tufts switched pitchers from sophomore Jake Crawford
(Boise, ID) to classmate Chris DeGoti (Miami,
FL). Linscott drew a bases-loaded walk on five pitches to
score McGregor and close the gap to 5-2, but DeGoti got Chris Burke
to fly out to foul ground in left field to end the threat and the
game. The three men left on base made it 10 for the game for the
Bobcats. It was DeGoti's second save of the season.
Ryan moved to 2-0 on the season after posting seven shutout
inings, allowing only three hits and three walks while striking out
five batters. Chiampa suffered his first loss to move to 2-1,
despite a solid outing in which the righthander allowed three runs,
one earned, on seven hits and one walk over seven innings.
