narrowly lost to #17 Williams

SOMERVILLE -- Tufts junior keeper Alan
Bernstein (Wayne, NJ) made six saves on the afternoon, but the
#17 Williams College Ephs tallied a goal late in the first overtime
to overtake the Jumbos, 1-0, in NESCAC men's soccer action on
Saturday at Kraft Field.
The Jumbos' offense struggled throughout the match, only getting
off two shots, with one of them being on net. The Ephs almost took
a lead in the 33rd minute when Bernstein was able to leap up into
the air and deflect a shot off the crossbar from senior Alex
Johnson (Niskayuna, NY).
Bernstein made an equally impressive save in the 55th minute on
a laser beam from senior Kiel Bonhomme (New York, NY). Bernstein
crossed over to his left and laid out to knock it away with his
left hand.
Tufts' lone shot on net came from senior Ron Coleman
(North Haven, CT) in the second half, but it was thwarted by Ephs
first year keeper Peter Morrell (Brunswick, ME).
Williams walked off with the victory with just 15 seconds
remaining in the first overtime. Senior Gaston Kelly (Hingham, MA)
controlled the ball with his back towards the net at about 25
yards, turned and hooked one by Bernstein for the game-winning
tally, his sixth of the season. Kelly had two other scoring chances
earlier in the contest stopped by Bernstein.
Despite the loss, the Jumbos have secured a spot in the NESCAC
tournament as their record now stands at 3-3-2 in conference and
5-6-2 overall. Tufts will host Bowdoin in the regular-season finale
on Friday at 12:30 pm. Williams is 5-1-2 in the NESCAC and 10-1-2
overall and will battle Middlebury at home on Friday in a 2 pm
contest.
