SMITHFIELD, RI (February 28, 2026) -- The Tufts University men's tennis squad opened its 2026 spring season Saturday afternoon on the road, as the Jumbos knocked off Division I Bryant University 5-2 in action from Fore Court Racquet and Fitness Club.
The Jumbos, ranked third in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Rankings, earned the valuable doubles point thanks to victories at No. 2 and No. 3. After
Sacha Maes and
Alex Ganchev fell 7-5 at No. 1, senior
Javier Gonzalez and newcomer
Kaetan Mehta earned a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
The clinching point came at No. 3 doubles, as brothers Andrej Djokis and
Matej Djokic outlasted Manveer Boparai and George Howard 7-5.
The doubles point was key, but the Jumbos were still able to win the majority of the matches at singles as well.
Garv Bahl was a three-set winner at No. 2 singles, as he rallied from a 6-1 defeat in the opening set to post wins of 6-0 and 6-3 in the second and third sets to pick up the win.
Mehta was a double winner for the Jumbos in his first duel match for Tufts, as the Clemson University transfer topped Daniel Baquero 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets. Sophomore
Stavros Mastrogamvrakis posted a thrilling three-set win, taking the third set in a tiebreaker for a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (2) win over Myles Peterson.
First-year
Jackson Rich was also a three-set victor in his first collegiate dual match, as he posted a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over Forbes Hollingsworth.
Eren Cheung was topped in three sets after taking the opening set, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5, while Ganchev fell at No. 1 singles for the Jumbos 7-6, 7-5.
The Jumbos will have a quick turnaround, taking on No. 12 Babson College Sunday at 3 p.m. in Beverly, MA at Bass River Tennis Club.
