MEDFORD, MA (May 17, 2025) -- Senior attack
Max Ettinghausen had a game-high six goals Saturday, helping lead the No. 1 Tufts University men's lacrosse team back into the NCAA Semifinals for the fifth straight year with a 17-8 win over No. 7 Gettysburg College in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament quarterfinals on Bello Field.
Tufts will now face New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe No. 5 Bowdoin College in the national semifinals Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. after the Polar Bears knocked off No. 4 Christopher Newport University on Bello Field in the day's finale 19-11.
The Jumbos wasted no time taking a quick 2-0 lead, as junior
Jack Regnery tallied to goals in just 52 seconds to put the Jumbos out in front at the 12:06 mark of the first quarter. Junior
Brooks Hauser scored in transition off of a nice feed from classmate
Ben Frisoli to up the Tufts' lead to 3-0, but Gettysburg answered with two consecutive scores to make it 3-2 with 3:35 to play in the opening frame.
A barrage of goals would follow that mini-run by the Bullets (15-5), as the Jumbos scored just eight seconds later thanks to a
Victor Salcedo goal at 3:22 of the first quarter. That tally would start a 4-0 run over just 2:13 to put the Jumbos up 7-2 at the end of the period as two of those goals came from Ettinghausen.
Tufts would run its lead up to 11-3 with another four-goal run in the second quarter, highlighted by pole goals from
Logan Lee and Frisoli, as Frisoli's was set up by a long assist from
Conner Garzone who earned the assist on the play.
After leading 11-5 at the break, a 3-0 third quarter split would be the final blow to the Gettysburg chances as senior
Joey Kraft's man-up goal was sandwiched by a pair of Ettinghausen strikes to put the game to bed.
The six goals in a game tied a career-high for Ettinghausen, as he also netted six earlier this season against Babson. He now has 56 goals on the year for the Jumbos.
Regnery finished with four goals for the Jumbos, while
Garrett Kelly and
Charlie Tagliaferri each set up a pair of goals on the day. Hauser and
Will Emsing each had a goal and an assist, and Frisoli finished with a goal, assist and two ground balls.
The Jumbos were excellent at the face-off dot on Saturday, as Salcedo was 9-for-11 with five ground balls in addition to his second goal of the season, while
Parker Merril was 8-for-13 with a team-high seven loose ball pick-ups.
Junior
Ben Clarke led the Jumbos with two caused turnovers, adding two grounders, while
Cam Delcristo added four ground balls and a caused turnover. Senior
Michael Ayers also tallied five ground balls and a caused turnover to his ledger.
Garzone continued his stellar play in the NCAA Tournament with 11 saves Saturday, and senior reserve goalkeeper
Ben Friedman stopped five shots in his 11 minutes of play.
Tufts held a slight 52-48 edge in shots over Gettysburg, while winning the ground ball battle, 42-26. The Jumbos were also stellar on special teams, going 2-for-3 on the EMO, while holding Gettysburg scoreless in four chances with the extra man.
Patrick Maroney, Jackson Alpaugh and Stokes Myers all had two goals for the Bullets, and Frank Barbera picked up three ground balls to go with four caused turnovers.
Tufts will take on the Polar Bears for the second time this season, as Tufts finished the regular season back on April 23 with a 15-14 double overtime win over Bowdoin up in Brunswick, Maine.
