Against Gettysburg, CNU and Bowdoin
Tufts and Gettysburg have played each other just once in the two program's storied histories, as the Bullets defeated Tufts 12-7 back on May 12, 2007 in Pennsylvania. Gettysburg made the NCAA semifinals that season. Tufts and CNU have played just twice all-time, but both outings have come in the last two seasons including one of the best Division III games of the year back on March 20 in Newport News, VA. Tufts defeated CNU 17-16 in overtime thanks to a
Max Ettinghausen goal after the Jumbos fell behind 8-0 in contest. Last year, Tufts defeated CNU 18-10 on March 6 on Bello Field. The most familiar foe this weekend will be Bowdoin College, as the Jumbos and Polar Bears have played 66 prior times. Bowdoin holds a slight 34-32 edge in the all-time series but Tufts has won the last eight games including a 15-14 overtime thriller back on April 23 this season.
Garrett Kelly scored in double overtime to earn the victory. The two teams have never met in the NCAA Tournament.
A Look at the No. 1 Jumbos (20-0)
The Jumbos come into the weekend winners in their last 25 games overall dating back to last year, and are looking to get back to the NCAA title game for the eighth time in program history. Tufts is also in search of back-to-back national titles for the second time in program history, also accomplishing the feat in 2014 and 2015. The Jumbos are have appeared in the NCAA Tournament in every year since 2009, and are coming off their 13th NESCAC title earlier this month.
Tufts has also won its last nine games on Bello Field in the NCAA Tournament, dating back to the 2019 season, and haven't lost to a non-NESCAC team at home in the NCAA Tournament since 2009.
On Wednesday afternoon, Tufts was honored with NCAA-high 10 All-Americans by USA Lacrosse Magazine, as the Jumbos saw four First Team honorees in
Jack Regnery,
Joey Waldbaum,
Charlie Tagliaferri and
Ben Frisoli.
Garrett Kelly and
Michael Ayers were Second Team awardees, while
Max Ettinghausen, Brooks Hasuer,
Parker Merril and
Cam Delcristo were Honorable Mentions.
The Jumbos come into the weekend as one of the top teams in many statistical categories, including scoring margin and offense, ground balls per game and clearing percentage. The Jumbos are pouring in 17.5 goals per game this season, ninth-most in Division III, while outscoring opponents by 8.35 goals per game. That mark is also eighth-best in NCAA Division III. Tufts has picked up 43.50 ground balls per game, seventh-most in the nation, while also leading the NESCAC in caused turnovers per game, total assists, points, and man-up offense.
Regnery leads the Jumbo attack with 89 points in just 17 games this season, scoring a team-high 65 goals to go with 24 assists. Hauser has netted 46 goals to go with 20 helpers and 66 points, and Ettinghausen has 50 goals including five game-winning goals. Tagliaferri leads the team with 26 assists, adding 29 goals, and Kelly has scored 35 goals at this middie spot for the Jumbos. Sophomore
Will Emsing has 23 goals and 21 assists, while
Beau Keough has come off the bench to pour in 30 points on the season.
Frisoli has totaled 16 points at the LSM spot, also picking up 30 ground balls and causing 18 turnovers, and sophomore LSM
Logan Lee has a team-high 23 caused turnovers as well. Ayers has a team-high 67 ground balls from non face-off players, and Waldbaum has 55 ground balls and 19 forced mistakes.
George Panagopoulos has started all 20 games, posting 13 caused turnovers for the season.
Conner Garzone has started every game he has played in for the last three seasons for the Jumbos, and he has stopped 58 percent of the shots on goal this season.
The Other Squads This Weekend
Gettysburg College
Gettysburg advanced through the opening weekend with a 14-12 win over No. 7 Washington and Lee on Sunday. The Bullets played the Captains at the Mustang Classic on Mar. 14, falling 13-4. Jack Dunleavy leads the attack with 71 points on a team-best 35 assists to go with 36 goals. Jackson Barroll leads the team with 39 goals while ranking second with 48 points. Andy Marquet leads the defense with 25 caused turnovers and has added 49 ground balls. Will Hedley has a team-best 61 ground balls and has 26 caused turnovers. He has also contributed eight goals and six assists. Frank Barbara has 19 caused turnovers and 49 ground balls. Murphy Hoey has a 9.48 goals-against average and .520 save percentage in goal this season. He made a career-high 17 saves in the third-round win over Washington and Lee. Gettysburg ranks among the nation's best in holding onto the ball, committing just 14.95 turnovers per game, sixth-fewest per game in Division III.
Christopher Newport
Making its fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals, Christopher Newport joins Tufts and RIT as the only programs in the nation with five consecutive Elite Eight berths. During those appearances, the Captains also have two Final Four trips after reaching the national semifinals in 2021 and 2023. CNU punched its ticket last weekend after upending Grove City, 16-14, in the second round of the tournament before beating No. 16 Lynchburg, 22-10, on Sunday. During the two games, senior All-American Brett Jackson landed 12 total goals, including seven strikes against the Hornets. Meanwhile, with his work in the opening rounds of the tournament, Kevin Miller now has 78 assists this year. That leads the country and ranks 11th on the all-time Division III single-season charts. It also stands as the third-most by a sophomore in NCAA history, trailing only Kean's Will Van Dorn (92 in 1998) and Amherst's Quinn Moroney (80 in 2014). Along with setting a new school standard for assists this year, Miller also eclipsed the program's points record on Sunday. He enters the weekend with 110 total points this season, topping the old mark of 105 set by Dylan Rice in 2022. Fittingly, for his work this year, Miller was honored as a second-team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine on Wednesday. Additionally, Warner Cabaniss garnered first-team accolades, Jamie Smith was a third-team selection, and both Jackson and Mason Bellinger grabbed honorable mention citations. Cabaniss currently ranks 11th in the country with a .683 faceoff percentage, while his 1,098 career victories place him fifth in Division III history and ninth among all collegiate lacrosse players in NCAA lore. Meanwhile, Smith leads the nation with 79 goals this year, and Bellinger pocketed his 222nd save of the season on Sunday. That stands as the third-highest total by a Captain.
Bowdoin College
This has been another record-breaking campaign for numerous Polar Bears, which continued heading into NCAA Tournament play. Head Coach Bill Mason has led the Polar Bears to 58 wins in his first four seasons as head coach of Bowdoin, which is the most successful four-year stretch in the history of the program. Senior Jason Lach broke the program's 28-year old career goal scoring mark of 177 (set by Judd Newkirk '97) and, with exactly 200 career goals, is the only player in program history to reach that plateau (so far). Attackman Patrick Fitzgerald shattered the school's single-season goal scoring mark this year (69, also held by Newkirk in 1995), totaling 76. Fitzgerald, who missed most of the 2024 campaign with an injury, has been closing in on Lach's career goals mark over the last few weeks and enters the CNU contest with 199 career goals. Goaltender Robert Hobbs, who already ranks first in Bowdoin history with 58 career wins, became the team's all-time saves leader, surpassing Will Casella '00 (917), and currently has 928 in his career. Jed Hoggard has 32 caused turnovers this spring, just three off the single-season mark (35 by Matt Egan, 2012) and, with 61, is six back of the career record held by Ben Brewster '14 (67).The Polar Bears earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and hosting rights for a regional last weekend, where they posted a pair of blowouts over Rivier (28-3) and Amherst (16-5).
Bowdoin's plus-36 goal margin is the best for any remaining team in this year's tournament.
