AMHERST, MA (April 19, 2025) -- The No. 1 Tufts University men's lacrosse team allowed just two goals over the final 47 minutes of regulation, clamping down No. 8 Amherst College in a 14-5 road win for the Jumbos in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play from Pratt Field Saturday.
The Jumbos have now won 19 straight games dating back to last season, the longest streak in NCAA men's lacrosse, while Tufts has won the last six meetings with Amherst dating back to 2019. The win in Amherst was also the third straight in the series for Tufts, daring back to 2017.
The early going of the game on Saturday slanted towards Amherst, as the Mammoths came out strong and tallied the first three goals of the game after an Alex Vlacich goal with 2:11 left in the first period.
Tufts would get on the board with 22 seconds to play in the opening stanza, as
Max Ettinghausen tallied his 38th of the season unassisted. Tufts would need just 20 seconds to double its goal total, as
Jack Regnery converted with two seconds left in the quarter to make it 3-2 Amherst after one.
Regnery's second of the day with 12:22 left in the first half tied the game for the first time, and sophomore
Chase Beyer netted his second of the season from
Beau Keough to put Tufts up for good at the 10:42 mark of the second quarter.
Junior
Brooks Hauser kept the goals coming for the Jumbos with 5:25 on the clock in the second quarter, converting a beautiful clear off of a nice save from goalkeeper
Conner Garzone and a feed from senior
Joey Waldbaum.
Bob Gross would stop the run 10 seconds later off of a face-off win from the Mammoths to make it 5-4, but the combination of Hauser and Regnery set each other up for goals before the end of the half to make it 7-4 at the stoppage.
The third quarter would largely dominated by the Jumbos, as
Garrett Kelly scored twice before
Will Emsing stung the net with 3:13 left in the period to make it a six-goal game at 10-4. Alex Giacobbe answered for Amherst with 1:18 to play in the third, but that would be the final goal of the day for the Mammoths.
Kelly scored his third of the game just before the end of the third quarter, and Emsing,
Ben Frisoli and
Joey Kraft all tallied in the fourth to put the game away.
Tufts outshot the Mammoths on the day 57-41, including a 36-18 edge in shots on goal, and the Jumbos forced their hosts into 28 turnovers on the day. Tufts also won the ground ball battle 36-26.
Garzone was strong in net for the Jumbos, as he played 52 minutes while stopping 11 shots before handing things over to
Ben Friedman for the final 7:50 of the game. Friedman made two saves as well in relief.
Kelly and Regnery each had three goals and an assist on the day, while Hauser finished with two goals, an assist and two ground balls. Ettinghausen had a goal and assist, and Emsing also recorded two scored on the day.
Waldbaum continued his standout season with three caused turnovers and three loose ball pickups, while classmate and defensive mate
