Tufts Men Finish Second at MIT Winter Invitational to Close Semester

CAMBRIDGE, MA (December 7, 2025) – The Tufts University men's swimming & diving team finished second out of seven teams following the conclusion of the MIT Winter Invitational on Sunday.

The Jumbos compiled a team score of 1400 points, behind only host MIT (1706). Hamilton College placed third with an 818 score.

Tufts had a handful of individual and relay runner-up performances on Sunday as well. Starting with the 200 medley relay, the Jumbos' 1:30.02 time was second at the meet. The foursome was Nico Ogawa, Will Kaminski, Max Gerke and Isaac Shang. Ogawa's 23.37 opening leg was his 50 backstroke personal-best.

The Jumbos placed second in the 400 freestyle relay at the end of the night as well, timing 3:01.56. Shang, Jan Springer, Aidan Cole and Kaminski combined on the time. Tufts also had the third-place foursome of Adam Li, Spencer Thompson, Campbell McFall and Gerke who posted a 3:02.98 time.

Gerke, Kaminski and Jack Nussbaum added second-place showings on Sunday. In the 100 butterfly, Gerke's 48.74 mark was second, as was Kaminski's 45.04 for the 100 freestyle. Springer took fourth in the 100 free at 45.46. Both Kaminski and Springer's marks are career-bests.

Tufts had three of the top four finishers in the 200 breaststroke. Nussbaum led the group in second place. He had a NCAA B cut of 2:00.54 in the preliminaries, then touched second in the final (2:01.51). Connor Townson was third in the final (2:03.21) and JJ Arbuckle got into fourth for the final with his 2:04.06 swim.

The Jumbos received fine performances from their pair of divers in the one-meter competition. Jay Wilkinson's 457.95 score was third and Elias Brandt's 429.15 was sixth, while both marks were above the NCAA 11-dive qualifying standard of 425.

Rafae Shafi finished third in the 500 freestyle early Sunday night with a 4:35.60 mark, and also had a 50.23 personal-best time in a 100 backstroke time trial. Timmy Brady led Tufts in the 200 individual medley and was third overall in a 1:53.91 mark, while Cole was tops for Tufts and sixth overall in the 200 backstroke (1:52.16).

This closes the first semester of action for the Jumbos. They will return to the pool on January 17 at home versus Bates College.
