Men's Rowing Wins Fourth Straight Baker Cup Over WPI

WORCESTER, MA (April 21, 2024) - Tufts University Men's Rowing won its fourth straight Baker Cup over WPI in first varsity racing this morning on Lake Quinsigamond. The Jumbos have now held the Cup since 2019 (the 2020 and 2021 races were not held due to COVID).

The first varsity race for the third-ranked Jumbos against #6 WPI also included #8 Marietta College (who were not contenders for the Baker Cup). It was Marietta who gave the Jumbos a bigger challenge. Tufts pulled out to a half-length lead early and was able to maintain a near-full length margin throughout the 2000 meters. The Jumbos finished at a 6:01.2 time to 6:05.26 for Marietta and 6:07.76 for WPI. Tufts' line-up had coxswain Aidan Keusch, Nick Kuranda, Max Nusbaum, Peter Conard, Ryan Hankins, Xander Mesires, Max Landers, John Griffin and Liam Jenkins.

After a similar start to the second varsity race, the Jumbos gradually pulled away and by the 1000-meter mark were ahead by open water. Their advantage extended to two full lengths of open water and the Jumbos crossed the finish line with a 6:10.1 time. Marietta came across at 6:20.32, then WPI in 6:27.3. Coxswain Jamie Forman, Justin Sun, Peter McCormick, Patriick Moran, JT Machle, Mark Machle, Miles Smith, Seamus Ruiseal and Corbin Steck were the Tufts team.

Tufts had three entries in the third varsity race - its third, fourth and fifth varsities - against WPI. The Jumbo third varsity - coxswain Lucas Resnik, Gonzalo Escajadillo, Maxwell Rosenberger, Chris Millay, Henry Gray, Fritz Oldenburg, Roan Dalton, Alex Flynn and Hayden Stone - were ahead by open water at the halfway point. All three Jumbo eights would finish ahead of the WPI third varsity in the race. The 3V8 won in 6:12.75, followed by the fourth Jumbo boat (6:17.31). Tufts' 5V8 (6:22.31) held off WPI (6:24.99) to take third by a half-length.

The Jumbo fourth varsity consisted of coxswain Whitney Critchfield, Charlie Guerra, Peter Battle, Alden Taylor, Abe Nelson, Eric Rohloff, Nathan Henderson, Robert Arsenault and George Lakis. The 5V8 was steered by Lexi Acosta with Colin Cooper, Aleksi Sefanov, Jack Donovan, Saul Meacham, Ethan Seidner, Dominic Svagdis, Griffin Hardy and Brendan McHugh.

Next weekend is the last of the regular-season with Tufts traveling to Onota Lake in Pittsfield for racing against Williams College and the MIT Lightweights team.
