Women's Swimming & Diving Opens With 183-116 Win at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, ME (November 16, 2024) – Fifth-year Jillian Cudney won two individual events and helped two relays to victory as the Tufts University women's swimming & diving team opened its season with a 183-116 dual meet victory at Bowdoin College.

Cudney swam the anchor leg of the 200 medley relay to start the meet. The combination of senior Gaurika Singh, junior Quinci Wheeler, junior Jade Foltenyi and Cudney won with a 1:47.73 time.

Singh resumed her Jumbo career impressively today. The two-time Olympic qualifier from Nepal was not with the team last year, but returned today and added a winning time of 57.88 seconds in the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Mia Solomon followed up Singh's win with one of her own in the 100 breaststroke in a 1:07.63 time.

Cudney had her first individual win in the 50 free by half a second over junior teammate Isa Chambers 24.42 to 24.94. Soon after that Cudney earned the victory in the 100 free touching in 54.01 seconds.

Wheeler, part of the two relay victories also, had an individual first in the 200 breaststroke with her 2:26.79 mark. That was followed by a 5:16.09 win from senior Cierra McCarty in the 500 free.

First-year Noa Chambers won in her collegiate debut today, swimming 2:10.73 in the 200 individual medley. First-year Sweeney Su then led off the first-place 200 freestyle relay that won (1:37.91). She was followed by Wheeler, Isa Chambers and Cudney.

Among Tufts' top finishers in other events, junior Madeleine Dunn had a pair of good runner-up times in the 1000 freestyle (10:20.39) and the 200 backstroke (2:07.33). Wheeler was second in the 200 free (1:57.08), senior Lara Wujciak timed 2:09.75 as the runner-up in the 200 butterfly and first-year Angel Smyrniou was second place in the 100 butterfly (59.03).

In diving, the Jumbos were third in one-meter with Arya Gupta (238.57) and second in the three-meter competition where Nika Renshaw scored 238.71 points.

Bowdoin first-year Natalie Garre won three events for the hosts (1000 free, 200 free, 200 back).

The Jumbos swim at WPI next Saturday with Williams College and Trinity College.
