Women's Soccer Cruises To 3-0 Road Win At Emerson To Start 2023 Slate

BOSTON (September 6, 2023) -- The Tufts University women's soccer team opened its 2023 campaign with a strong 3-0 road victory at Emerson College, scoring three goals in a span of 3:40 of the first half to cruise to the non-conference win in action from Rotch Field Wednesday.

The Jumbos (1-0) controlled the play early on in the contest, nearly scoring in the opening 20 seconds as a shot from Caroline Kelly was stopped off the line by a defender just 16 seconds into the contest.

In the 14th minute, Thalia Greenberg got off her first attempt of the 2023 season but her shot was stopped by Amara Schaub of Emerson. The Tufts pressure would continue, and Nicola Sommers would get the Jumbos on the board in the 22nd minute as she scored assisted from Kelly to make it 1-0.

Less than a minute later, sophomore Elsi Aires doubled the Jumbos lead as she netted an unassisted goal at 22:29 of the game. The goals would keep coming for the Jumbos, as Greenberg tallied unassisted at the 25:17 mark of the game to finish the scoring on the night for Tufts.

Despite no scoring, Tufts would dominate possession and posted four corner kicks before being awarded a penalty kick in the 39th minute. The attempt though would be saved by Schaub, keeping the game locked at a 3-0 scoreline.

Emerson would come alive in the second half, outshooting the Jumbos 9-5 in the period but Kianna Hill was up to the task on all six shots that came on frame as she recorded a shutout to open the campaign.

Aires led the way with four shots in 44 minutes of action, while Greenberg added three shots as well including a team-best three on frame.

Zoe Simmons and Anna Swisher each posted two shots to lead the Lions (0-3).

Tufts will open New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action on Saturday, heading to New London, CT to battle Connecticut College September 9 at noon.
