MEDFORD, MA (September 23, 2023) – In a meeting between Top 15 NESCAC teams today, it was all Tufts Field Hockey as the Jumbos defeated Hamilton College 5-1 at Ounjian Field. Sophomore
Hannah Biccard led Tufts with three goals.
The Jumbos (5-0, 3-0 NESCAC) entered as the #5 team in the country this week, while Hamilton (3-2, 1-2) came in at #15. Tufts built a 5-0 lead before allowing a Continental goal in the fourth quarter.
On a beautiful first goal for Tufts,
Lainie Pearson sent a long pass to
Kylie Rosenquest while the Jumbos were in transition. Rosenquest beat her defender and then opened up some space for a pass with a move to the right. Biccard received the ball in front of the goal and maneuvered right to get the shot around the goalie for a 1-0 Tufts lead 11 minutes into the game.
The Jumbos would go up 2-0 two minutes later as Pearson converted a penalty stroke for her first career goal.
Tufts continued to dominate into the second period with another goal on transition by Biccard 44 seconds into the frame. She took a long pass from
Ashley Zolin and drove home a shot as soon as she entered the inside top right curve of the circle for a 3-0 Tufts advantage.
Tufts goalie
Lydia Eastburn capped the half with a save on a Hamilton penalty stroke. The host Jumbos had advantages of 8-3 in shots and 4-1 in corners at the break.
Tufts would add two more in the third quarter, with
Andrea DelGiudice setting up both of them. On a corner inserted by
Mia D'Angelo, DelGiudice skidded a pass through to
Rachel Scrivanich on the right side of the goal and she directed it in less than two minutes into the third. Four minutes later again on a corner Biccard got her hat trick after receiving a pass from DelGuidice and scoring her fifth of the season making it 5-0.
Hamilton would break up the shutout with a goal during a corner with five minutes left in the fourth. An initial shot by Continental Hannah Dillon was saved by Tufts'
Isabel Ginns, who had entered to play the fourth. However, in a scrum for the rebound Lilly Truchon tipped it over to Becky Felker and she scored into an open cage.
Both teams played a pair of goalies. For Tufts, Eastburn gets the win after making two saves. Ganns came in and had one stop. Abby Griffin (3 saves) and Reilly Loughman (1 save) split time for Hamilton.
Total shots (13-5), shots on goal (9-5) and corners (8-3) were all in favor of the Jumos.
Tufts gets right back at it with another key NESCAC game tomorrow at Trinity College.
