MEDFORD, MA (September 17, 2023) -- The No. 7 Tufts University women's soccer team battled No. 16 Amherst College Sunday on Bello Field, but three second-half goals by the visiting Mammoths lifted the visitors to a 4-1 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) win.
The Mammoths (4-0-1, 1-0-1 NESCAC) got on the board in the 21st minute, as a loose ball was corralled in the box and fired home by Patience Kum to give Amherst the early lead. Tufts had a great chance late in the first half, as first-year
Reese Birch had her attempt right in front saved.
The Jumbos nearly leveled again just before halftime, as sophomore center back
Lena Sugrue rattled the crossbar as the game went into intermission with the Mammoths up a goal.
After the break, Tufts broke through as
Elsi Aires picked up the ball near midfield, dribbled 20 yards and ripped a left-footed shot into the top left corner for a phenomenal individual effort to tie the game at 48:13 of the game.
Minutes later, Kum scored her second of the game for the eventual game-winner for Amherst, as she picked up a ball before it could be cleared and slotted home on the left side.
The lead would increase to 3-1 for Amherst at 63:42, as Katie Pederson scored before Brooke Ingemi tallied with five seconds left in the game for an insurance goal for the Mammoths.
Tufts outshot its visitors Sunday 14-11, though Amherst held a 7-6 lead in shots on goal. Both teams posted five corner kicks, while Tufts was whistled for 10 fouls to the seven of the Mammoths. Sugrue led the Jumbos with four shots, while Birch and Aires finished with shots on goal to lead Tufts. Keeper
Kianna Hill made three saves for Tufts.
The Jumbos will host MIT Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. in non-conference action on Bello Field.
