SPRINGFIELD, MA (May 6, 2023) -- The Tufts University women's track and field squad completed action at the three-day New England Championships Saturday, hosted by Springfield College on Blake Track, as the Jumbos finished as te team runner-up for the meet with 75 total points.
Saturday saw the conclusion of the women's heptathlon, and Madelyn Silveira moved up the leader board to finish fourth with 3939 points for the event. Silveira finished fifth in the long jump, moving up two spots with a final mark of 4.93 meters for 540 points. She kept moving up the scoreboard with a strong toss in the javelin, taking fourth place with a final distance of 25.66 meters. The final race was the 800 meters, and Silveira took fourth place after running a 2:31.83 to add 670 more points.
Starting with the throwing events,
Ravyn Tammiruusu earned a 15th place finish after posting a 34.70 meter toss in the discus. The pole vault saw sophomore
Sarah Firth take second place after getting over the bar at 3.75 meters, and
Kelsie Hao was sixth with a height of 3.50 meters.
Lia Rotti earned yet another victory in the triple jump this season, as the senior star powered to a leap of 12.35 meters, a season-best for the standout.
Jordan Andrew was also seventh in the event with a 11.47 meter mark, and
Jen Rotti took ninth after recording a 11.33 meter jump.
Lia Rotti also competed in the javelin throw during her busy day, finishing 12th with a toss of 34.51 meters.
On the track, first-year
Jaclyn Turner ran a 11:50.37 in the 3000m steeplechase to take 15th place overall, while
Hannah Neilon earned five points with a fourth-place finish in the 1500 meters after running a season-best 4:30.01. Sophomore
Carly Rinko got onto the podium with an eighth-place finish, earning a point for the team total with a time of 2:18.10 in the 800 meter run.
Antonia Knoth had a strong race in the 400 meter hurdles Saturday, earning fourth pace and five points for Tufts after her season-best time of 1:04.28.
Emily Sverak was ninth as well after crossing the line in 1:06.53. First-years
Grace Ogden and
Elizabeth Donahue were 14th and 16th in the 5000 meter run, respectively, after posting times of 18:36.79 and 18:45.92.
Tufts 4x800 meter relay of
Amelia Neiman,
Anne-Sophie Janssen,
Hannah Fraser and
Julia Dolce were fifth with a time of 9:38.37 to finish action.
As a team, Tufts was second overall with 75 points, trailing only MIT and its 135 points for the weekend.
Tufts will head to the NEICAAA meet on Friday and Saturday, May 12-13.
