NORTHAMPTON, MA (April 14, 2023) -- It was a solid start to the two-day affair at the 2023 Carla Coffey Invitational for the Tufts University women's outdoor track and field squad, as the Jumbos finished the opening day atop the leader board thanks to some strong work in the field events.
In the pole vault,
Lia Rotti posted a solid height of 3.40 meters to finish tied for second place with teammate
Sarah Firth, who also cleared 3.40 meters on her first attempt before failing out at 3.55 meters. Rotti would also win the javelin with a new personal-best toss of 36.63 meters, a New England Regional meet qualifying mark. Rotti posted the final mark on her second throw of six on the afternoon, also tallying a toss of 35.86 and 35.33 meters.
The Jumbos got another winner in the women's hammer throw, as Elizabeth Graham continued her stellar outdoor season with a new personal-best toss of 42.62 meters. The throw was just off the Tufts all-time top 10, but still was a Division III New England Regional meet qualifying mark.
Madeline Walters also added a new personal-best in the hammer with a throw of 36.70 meters for fifth place overall.
In the heptathlon, Madelyn Silveira finished the afternoon after four events sitting in third place with 2,367 points. Silveira finished third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.78, and then was fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.47 meters. After a toss of 7.54 meters in the shot put, Silveira was second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.54 seconds.
Maelynn Ugokwe sits in ninth in the heptathlon after the opening day with 2081 points, finishing in the top 10 of all four events, while
Sydney Spivy and
Cassidy Ho were 12th and 13th, respectively, with point totals of 1815 and 1770.
Action in day two of the 2023 Carla Coffey Invitational will start at 11 a.m. at Smith College in Northampton, MA.
