Women's Lacrosse Wins Third Straight With 16-6 Win At Bates

LEWISTON, ME (April 12, 2023) -- Sophomore Margie Carden led all scorers with five goals, as the No. 5 Tufts University women's lacrosse team used a 7-0 third quarter to pull away for a 16-6 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) road victory in action from Garcelon Field.

Carden has now scored three or more goals in five of her last six, including posting five tallies in three of those contests. The Bobcats (5-8, 1-7 NESCAC) started the scoring in the game as Maddy Roelofs netted her 10th of the season, but Tufts would close the first quarter on a four-goal spurt powered by Carden's 30th goal of the season and Emma Joyce's 29th strike on the campaign.

The stretch would continue into the second quarter, as Allie Zorn and Caroline Walter each notched their 11th goals of the season to make the score 6-1. Bates would pull back to within three at the halftime intermission, as Caroline Keating netted a woman-up goal just before the break to make it 7-4 at intermission.

The third quarter would be the difference though, as Walter started the offensive outburst for the Jumbos 90 seconds into the second half with an unassisted tally to put Tufts up four. The goals would continue to come for Tufts (9-2, 5-1 NESCAC), as Carden scored three in the third quarter including a strike off a pass from Kathryn Fernandopulle to make the score 14-4 at the end of the period.

First-year Kate Deehan scored with the extra woman to start the fourth quarter, and Emma Joyce finished the scoring on the night for Tufts to end a 9-0 run as the Jumbos cruised to the victory. The defensive unit during that stretch was strong, as Tufts allowed just two shots in the third quarter while forcing seven turnovers in the period.

Tufts outshot its hosts 38-14 on the night, while holding an 18-9 edge in ground balls. Carden netted her five goals on 10 shots, a team-high, and Walter tallied a season-high three goals on four shots on goal. Caroline Conaghan led the Jumbos with two assists, scoring once for three points, and Joyce tallied two goals and four draw controls.

Genna Gibbons finished with two goals, two ground balls and two draw controls, and Zorn also contributed a pair of goals in the win. Fernandopulle picked up three ground balls and a caused turnover in addition to her assist, and Mary Grace Reynolds also added three ground balls. Becca Gable forced a team-best two turnovers, and Kate Wujciak and Sophia Antezana also added two draw controls.

Courtney Kaufman and Pascale de Buren combined to make two saves in the win for Tufts. The Jumbos were 18-of-20 in clears on the night, earning their third consecutive win with the victory.

Roelofs led Bates with two goals, and Cammie Lavoie made 16 saves Wednesday.

The Jumbos will host No. 7 Wesleyan University Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m. on Bello Field in more NESCAC play.
