SOMERVILLE, MA (April 1, 2023) -- The Tufts University women's track and field squad hosted their first of two home meets this spring, winning the victory at the 2023 Tufts Snowflake Classic in action from the Ellis Oval Saturday afternoon.
The Jumbos finished the day with 183 points, which was over twice as many as second-place Connecticut College and its 87 points.
Tufts got five individual victories on Saturday, led by the pair of wins by
Lia Rotti in the long jump and the javelin. Rotti picked up the victory in the long jump after finishing with a mark of 5.24 meters, while chalking up a toss of 34.19 meters in the javelin to best the field.
Sydney Spivy was also fifth in the javelin with a final mark of 27.74 meters.
Campbell Devlin was an individual winner in the 400 meter hurdles, running an New England Championships qualifying time of 1:04.64. Sophomore
Emma Smith was right behind her in the 400 hurdles, also posting a NEICAAA qualifying time of 1:05.18 to finish second overall.
In the 10,000 meters,
Eliana Montgomery picked up a New England Championships qualifying time of 39:53.89 for a victory, and
Gwenyth Stach was third in the longest race of the day with a 40:55.72. The last win of the afternoon came from senior Kelsie Hao, as her height was the second-best mark in the nation this year of 3.85 meters.
The Jumbos had a strong finish in the women's hammer throw, registering the four of the top five finishers. Elizabeth Graham finished with a heave of 39.65 meters for second place, while sophomore
Ravyn Tammiruusu was third with a mark of 36.46 meters.
Maja Nielsen was fourth with a mark of 36.15 meters coming on her final throw of the day, and
Madeline Walters took fifth overall with a mark of 34.31m.
In the triple jump,
Jaidyn Appel had a mark of 11.28 meters on her final jump to take second place, while junior
Sarah Pillone was third after registering a distance of 11.11 meters.
Jen Rotti was fourth with the same mark of 11.11 meters, while
Jordan Andrew added four points to the team total with a 10.82 meter jump for fifth place.
In the 3000m steeplechase, first-year
Paige Zhang was third with a time of 13:07.65, and sophomore Geri Tabbachino took fourth place overall after running a 13:22.03. First-year
Elizabeth Donahue was sixth in the 5000 meters with a time of 18:30.33, and
Emily Sverak ran a 2:23.14 in the 800 meters for eighth place.
Senior
Hannah Neilon was runner up in the 400 meter run, breaking the minute mark with a time of 59.72. In the discus, Tammiruusu took fifth place with a distance of 33.13 meters and the 4x100 relay team of Pillone,
Maddy Silveira,
Cora Kakalec and
Teghan Sydnor was second in a time of 50.93.
The Jumbos will travel to Troy, NY next weekend to compete in a tri-meet with RPI and Bates College at noon.
