Women's Outdoor Track and Field Opens At 2023 Ross & Sharon Irwin Meet

SAN DIEGO, CA (March 18, 2023) -- The Tufts University women's track and field squad opened the 2023 outdoor season on Saturday at Point Loma Nazarene University, taking part in the 2023 Ross & Sharon Irwin Collegiate Track Meet. 

The afternoon on the track started with a strong run by Hannah Neilon in the 1500 meters, as the senior took third place overall in a field of Division I, II and III runners after posting a time of 4:37.39. Teammate Julia Dolce was 13th with a time of 4:51.78, and Lexi Dean took 21st place after breaking five minutes with a time of 4:58.11. 

In the 400 meter run, Emma Smith posted a time of 59.22 to take 10th place, while Emma Sasanov and Amelia Neiman were 21st and 22nd with times of 1:02.40 and 1:02.75, respectively. In the 100 meter dash, Teghan Sydnor ran a 12.76 to take 24th place while teammate Sarah Pillone raced to a 31st place finish after recording a 13.04. 

Sydnor was back on the track to take 24th place in the 200 meters, sprinting to a time of 26.10 seconds. Nyla Thompson ran a 26.86 for 39th place, while Pillone and Smith followed with times of 26.89 and 26.92, respectively. 

In the 5000 meters, first-year Grace Ogden ran a very strong race to finish sixth overall with a time of 18:17.19. Eliana Montgomery was 12th in the 5K after crossing the line in 18:46.36, and Gwenyth Stach was 20th after recording a 19:10.20. 

The Tufts "B" relay finished the day in the 4x400, running a 4:08.44 to take seventh place. 

In the field events, Elizabeth Graham tossed the hammer 40.88 meters to take 13th place, while Madeline Walters was 21st after a throw of 34.90 meters. Jaidyn Appel competed in the long jump, finishing 11th with a mark of 5.10 meters, and Tamia Dubidad took 24th place after jumping to a distance of 4.60 meters. 

In the shot put, Graham was 27th overall with a final heave of 9.88 meters while Maelynn Ugokwe was 31st with a mark of 8.97 meters. Walters was 21st in the discus with a throw of 29.33 meters, and Graham took 23rd place with a final mark of 27.24 meters. 

The Jumbos will be right back on the track next Friday, March 24, competing in the Mangrum Invitational at Cal State San Marcos at 11:30 a.m. local time.
