CAMBRIDGE, MA (February 7, 2023) -- The No. 11 Tufts University women's squash team made the short trek across town to take on No. 2 Harvard University but couldn't keep its winning streak going as the Jumbos dropped its first match in eight outings with a 9-0 loss to the Crimson from the Murr Center Tuesday afternoon.
The Jumbos had only lost once in the calendar year of 2023, falling only to top-ranked Trinity College back on January 10 in Hartford. Since then, Tufts (10-4) had rattled off seven consecutive wins before being felled by the Crimson Tuesday. At No. 1, Marina Stefanoni topped
Vharsha Dinesh 11-1, 11-2 and 11-3, while Habeeba Eldefawy knocked off
Riddhi Joshi 11-3, 11-3 and 11-5 at No. 2. Serena Daniel played a hard-fought match at No. 3 against
Caroline Chin, but Chin dropped an 11-4, 11-8 and 11-2 decision.
Tufts got one game off the defending national champions at No. 4, as
Aleezah Burhan won the third game against Brecon Welch 11-8 but was unable to complete the comeback as she dropped an 11-5, 11-3, 8-11, 11-1 match. At No. 5, Amira Singh bested
Nieve Monderer 11-5, 11-3 and 11-5 and
Sanjana Vissapragada battled hard at No. 6 before dropping a 11-7, 11-4 and 11-3 decision to Charlotte Orcutt.
The Crimson got an 11-1, 11-3 and 11-4 win at No. 7 as Tufts'
Isa Schneider fell to Binney Huffman, and Molly Stoltz bested
Ellyn Xu at No. 8 11-1, 11-5 and 11-4. In the final spot of the lineup, Emma Carney of Harvard knocked off
Ami Sao 11-9, 11-6 and 11-7 in a very competitive match.
The Jumbos finish their regular season and will now turn their attention to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Tournament this weekend at Williams College. Tufts will be the No. 2 seed and open in the NESCAC Quarterfinals against No. 7 seed Colby College Saturday, February 11 at 11:30 a.m. For more information about the NESCAC Tournament, click the link below for the Tournament Webpage.
