SPRINGFIELD, MA (February 18, 2023) -- The Tufts University women's track and field team saw five season-best marks in field events Saturday, including three Top 10 national marks, in action from the Springfield College Triangle Classic.
The Jumbos saw
Jaidyn Appel have a monster day, as she posted a victory in the high jump while clearing the top height in the nation this season at 1.77. The height was a personal-best for the reigning national title holder in the high jump, while resetting her own school record. The jump came on her seventh jump of the afternoon, while she cleared six of her seven attempts on the day.
In the pole vault,
Sarah Firth posted a career-high height at 3.90 meters to earn the victory on the day. The height is a school record, while ranking No. 2 in Division III. Other nationally ranked marks came in the triple jump, as Appel was a double winner with a season-best mark of 11.60 meters, which ranks as No. 20 in Division III.
Jen Rotti also posted a season-best mark in the triple jump, ranking No. 34 nationally with a 11.32 meter mark.
Also in the pole vault,
Nyla Thompson finished with a mark of 3.45 meters for a career-high, ranking No. 43 nationally after she took sixth place Saturday.
Other strong performances Saturday included a win in the 60 meter hurdles by junior
Maddy Silveira, who ran a personal-best time of 9.57 seconds.
Jen Rotti was third in the long jump with a mark of 5.18 meters, and Silveira was fourth in the long jump after finishing with a distance of 5.10 meters.
Vivian Lau was a winner in the 5000 meters, running a collegiate-best time of 20:27.19, while junior teammate
Sarah Sandlow was second overall with a 21:14.46. In the 3000 meter run,
Elizabeth Donahue ran a collegiate-best time of 10:33.28 for second place, and
Grace Ogden was right behind her in third place after running a 10:37.20. Junior
Madeline Huh also ran a 10:37.97 to take fifth place.
Lexi Dean was also a winner for the Jumbos in the 1000 meters, as she ran a very strong personal-best time of 3:03.96 for the victory. First-year
Julia Dolce was right behind her with a 3:09.55 for second place. In the 600 meter run,
Emily Sverak was second overall with a time of 1:41.58, and
Antonia Knoth was also runner-up in the 400 meter run with a 1:02.23. In the mile, Jaclyn turner raced to a time of 5:28.01 for the runner-up position, and
Kira Rosen was fourth after finishing with a 5:38.33.
In the weight throw Elizabeth Graham was fifth overall after a new PR of 13.74 meters, posting that personal-best mark on her final throw of the afternoon.
The Jumbos will travel to the Division III New England Championships next weekend, starting on Friday, February 24 at 11:30 a.m. at The TRACK at New Balance in Brighton.
