BRUNSWICK, MA (October 24, 2023) -- First-year forward
Waverly Sumner posted her first collegiate multi-goal game Tuesday evening on the road at Bowdoin College, but the Jumbos would fall 3-2 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action in the regular season finale for both squads.
The Polar Bears (8-3-4, 5-2-3 NESCAC) got on the board first at the 18:18 mark of the opening half as Kyra Hacker jumped on a loose ball in the box off a free kick and fired it home to the right of Tufts first-year keeper
Gigi Edwards for the goal.
Bowdoin's lead would double in the 36th minute, as Morgan Smiley scored unassisted after a corner kick. The Jumbos would trim the lead in half with under three minutes remaining in the opening half, as Sumner beat a defender on the left wing and ripped a shot into the far right netting for the goal.
After the intermission, Tufts saw its deficit increase back up to two as Greta Farkas scored on a penalty kick at the 55:44 mark of the game. Less than three minutes later,
Thalia Greenberg fed a through ball into Sumner inside the box, who took one touch and fired inside the left post for the goal at 57:09.
The Jumbos had another strong chance to tie the game in the 71st minute, as a header off a free kick by
Lena Sugrue was stopped by Bowdoin keeper Charlotte Iannone.
Caroline Kelly would have a good chance as well in the final 10 minutes, but the Jumbos would be unable to find the equalizer.
Tufts finished the contest with a 16-15 lead in shot attempts for the contest, including a 9-2 edge in the second half. Both teams earned three corner kicks for the game, while Edwards finished with eight saves in the game. The eight saves were the second-most in a game for the first-year Tufts goalkeeper.
