Women's Soccer Knocks Off Bates 4-0 On Senior Day

MEDFORD, MA (October 14, 2023) -- The Tufts University women's soccer team honored its seven seniors Saturday on Bello Field with a 4-0 victory over Bates College in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play.

The Jumbos (7-2-3, 3-2-2 NESCAC) honored its seven seniors prior to the game, and then saw three of those seven find the back of the net in the contest. The scoring got underway early in the contest, as Elsi Aires set up Caroline Kelly for her second of the season at the 3:27 mark.

Tufts would outshoot the visiting Bobcats 10-2 in the period, but wouldn't be able to add to its lead as the game went to the halftime break with the Jumbos still up 1-0. After the intermission Tufts quickly added to its lead, as senior Nicola Sommers scored her third of the season on a dish from fellow senior Erin Duncan at 51:57.

Ten minutes later, the Jumbos added to their lead as senior Thalia Greenberg scored unassisted for her sixth of the campaign to make it 3-0. The final tally of the afternoon for the Jumbos came from Duncan, as she netted her second goal in 2023 on a rebound of a shot at 67:47.

Bates (2-7-3, 1-6-1 NESCAC) started to have more of the ball in the final 20 minutes but two great chances late in the game by the Bobcats were denied by diving stops from junior goalkeeper Kianna Hill

The Jumbos held a decided 22-10 lead in shots (22-10) and shots on goal (10-4), while also earning eight of the game's 11 corner kicks on the afternoon. Aires fired a team-high five shots for the Jumbos, while Sommers, Kelly and Greenberg also fired three attempts.

First-year Gigi Edwards played 68:07 of the game to share the shutout with Hill, who made four saves in relief. Maeve Parmelee and Gabby Hill-Junke each took three shots for the Bobcats, and Ruby Reimann stopped five shots in 70 minutes of action.

The Jumbos will continue their busy weekend on Sunday at noon, taking on No.13 Williams College on Bello Field in more NESCAC play.
