Box Score MEDFORD, MA (October 1, 2023) – Tufts University women's soccer entered the first half from Boucher Field against a red-hot Husson University down one goal, then freshman midfielder
Emily Nicholas' goals early in the second half put Tufts up for most of the second half. Husson sophomore midfielder Devon St. Louis's desperation strike from the right wing served too much for Freshman keeper
Gigi Edwards, awarding her the late equalizer forcing teams to share the points on the day.
Today's game was a tale of two halves. The Jumbos struggled to break the Eagles defense in the first half. They recorded a total of 17 shots in the first, with many of them being blocked by the defense, as the Jumbos were only able to place four shots toward the net facing a one-goal deficit.
The Jumbos finally broke free of the Husson defense in the second half, as they recorded 16 additional shots in the second half, putting 10 on target. Sophomore forward
Elsi Aires continues to showcase her offensive aggressiveness as she once again led the team in shots and shots on goal with nine total shots, four on target. Nicholas recorded two shots on the day and scored on both attempts, recording her second and third goals of the season.
The Jumbos defense allowed a total of four shots on the day, against a team that has been recording an average of 3.44 goals per game. Husson was coming off a 1-0 win against the University of Southern Maine the previous Wednesday, and the day before today's game, won against Vermont State University Lydon by a whopping 11-0. Something to hang their hats on despite the draw.
Nicholas scored her first of the day following an Aires shot from the right wing that took a deflection as it soared through the Husson defense. As the ball came down to find Nicholas, she took one touch to rifle Aires' service into the back of the net to level scoring at one a piece.
The final Tufts' goal resulted from a
Caroline O'Neill free kick that was delivered into the box just beyond midfield from the left wing. The first touch off the service was taken down by the shoulder of a Jumbo's forward, to the feet of Nicholas. She took one touch to settle, as the defender flew past her. A final touch set up her strike to settle it and slotted home the late goal to give Tufts the lead with 20 minutes remaining in the game.
Tufts University women's soccer improves to 4-2-3 on the day following the draw, and remains even at 2-2-2 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Husson advances to 6-3-1 on the day, 2-0 overall in the North Atlantic Conference.
Jumbos are back in action again on Thursday, as rally to face Endicott College from Bello Field in Medford MA at 4:00 pm. Live stats and video coverage will be available at
