BRIGHTON, MA (January 29, 2023) -- Junior
Jaidyn Appel won the high jump with a nation's best height, while
Lia Rotti posted a win in the triple jump to highlight action from the Middlebury New England Small College Invitational, hosted at The TRACK at New Balance.
Appel had a monster day for the Jumbos, as she picked up the victory in the high jump with a height of 1.73 meters (5'8''). She cleared the height on her first attempt, missing just once on five heights before failing out at 1.77 meters, which would have been a new career high.
Appel also competed in the triple jump, finishing second only to her teammate Rotti after using her sixth and final leap to soar 11.37 meters. Rotti won the triple jump with a mark of 11.86 meters, the fifth-best jump in Division III this indoor season.
Another highlight came in the 800 meter run, as senior
Hannah Neilon raced to a victory after crossing the line in 2:16.59. Her time places her 14th in NCAA Division III after Sunday's action.
Sophomore
Sarah Firth had a exceptional day in the pole vault, clearing 3.60 meters on her second height to finish second overall after recording the 17th best mark in the country this season.
First-year
Teghan Sydnor had a strong afternoon, finishing second in the 60 meter hurdles with a collegiate-best time of 9.08 seconds. Sydnor would then finish fourth in the 200 meter dash with another collegiate-best of 26.39. Her 60 meter hurdles time ranks 30th in the country, and ranks fourth all-time at Tufts.
Junior
Sarah Pillone had a busy afternoon, posting a fourth-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles after running a 9.17. Pillone would also finish seventh in the triple jump after recording a mark of 10.88 meters.
The 4x400 relay squad won the event with a time of 4:00.04, thanks to the quartet of
Annika Kral,
Campbell Devlin,
Antonia Knoth and
Emma Smith. That time ranks 15th in the country.
In the DMR, Alexandra Dean,
Emily Sverak, Neilon and Elanor Tyne raced to a fourth place time of 12:40.73, ranking eight in NCAA Division III after Sunday.
In the long jump, sophomore
Jordan Andrew and junior
Jen Rotti each were in the top eight, as Andrew recorded a mark of 5.28 meters for fifth place. Rotti used her second jump to finish with a distance of 5.00 meters for eighth place.
Sophomore Elizabeth Graham made the finals in the weight throw, as her third throw of the preliminary rounds ended up being her final mark, posting a toss of 12.22 meters.
In the 400 meter dash, Kral finished fifth overall with a time of 59.84 seconds while
Emma Smith was sixth in the event after recording a time of 1:00.15. In the mile, first-year
Lexi Dean recorded a time of 5:15.17 for sixth place, and junior
Lauren Pollak ran a 10:38.08 for ninth place in the 3000 meters.
First-year
Amelie Wickham finished fourth in the pole vault after clearing a collegiate-best mark of 3.30 meters, while
Nyla Thompson was seventh with a 3.30 meter height.
The Jumbos will be right back at The TRACK at New Balance Thursday and Friday, February 2-3, competing in the NEICAAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
